I'm fixing to pull the intake for the 4th time, what am I doing wrong??? Here's the prob. Changed the intake to a modern 4v without the oil tube, had to smack the oil vent can under the intake a few times to fit the new intake on. I then hooked up a breather on one valve cover and pcv valve on the other. Pvc valve connects to back of carb. I left the draft tube under the intake alone, didn't cap it. Now my truck is smoking once it warms up and blowing oil all over the back of the firewall. What is going on? Thanks

If you have the pcv and breather in the valve covers, you probably ought to remove the vent baffle can from under the intake, remove the draft tube and plug the hole. Make sure the valve covers have good oil baffles where the holes for the breather/pcv are.

What are you using to seal the ends of the intake to the block? if you're using the rubber seal that comes in the gasket kit, you might try to eliminate that and use a 1/4" bead of RTV instead.

Good baffles on the valve covers, I'm already using the 1/4 bead of RTV. Is it possible the draft tube could make the motor spit oil some where around the rear of the intake (it's a tight fit back there and I can't see where the oil is actually coming out). Thanks for the advice, please keep it coming.

When you pull the dipstick is there pressure coming out of the tube?

take the can out and use a freeze plug to block the hole behind the manifold. you have to either use it or plug it unless I can't read.

Most breathers lately have a knockout on the bottom to make them real or fake, check that.

Have you checked the oil pressure sender? A friend of mine once had what he thought was an intake leaking and it was a small crack in the oil pressure sender. May not be your problem, but it is something to check. You didn't say where the smoke was coming from...is it from around where the oil is hitting the firewall?

Smoking out the tailpipes bad, true dual exhaust. If the sending unit was the source of the leak, why would it smoke so bad? Zero smoke and ran great with the previous two barrel intake.

PCV is more than likely suck'n up oil. Or that intake is not seating because of baffle that sits there being in the way.

Try and pinch off the PCV or pull it out of the valve cover and see if it stops smoking.

Good point. I always get carried a way. Try that first, and with anything you try do things one at a time. Or you will never now what fixed the problem or if your getting any where.

Just found a pin hole in the sending unit line, it's spraying oil on the back of the block pretty good. To dark outside now I'll fix it tomorrow after work and post results. It doesn't make since why it would smoke out the tailpipes though.

Could be your smoking issue as well if its getting on the exhaust.

Make sure your PCV is flowing the correct direction.

X2..... I had the same problem on my 64 Olds. I changed over from 2bbl to 4 bbl and got it all buttoned up, and realized after oil gushing out of my dipstick (only when the car was under load and driving) that I realized my PCV was put back on reversed. I blew through it to find the proper direction, flipped it and problem solved.

Just 2 quick questions though-What color is the smoke coming out of the exhaust and does it smell rich? That can tell you a lot

Drive the car 10 miles to heat up and burn out residuals if that is the prob. Take the time to look again. You can't read oil smoke from exhaust if you have fixed some of known problems until you have taken a "joy ride" to burn out known repairs.
Engine takes a dump and loads the exhaust with antifreeze and oil. How long will it take to make large muffler to blow/boil/burn it out? Fresh engine, loaded exhaust system.

Pull the PCV hose off....if it's full of oil....that is a possible source...

If you have the PVC line coming off the breather in the valve cover make sure the breather is baffled. If not, it will suck the oil right off the rocker below the hole in the valve cover.............
Had the same problem on my son's 283. Like the other guys said. Pull that PCV line off and see if it quites smoking.

Oh yeah, forgot about this part! At work we call it the 'Uncle Buck' part of the repair. Works best on diesel trucks that have had bad turbos replaced.

Awesome, thanks for all the help. Turns out the problem was the oil sending unit line spraying a fine mist of oil all over the back of the engine. Fixed the leak and ran it for about ten minutes (open pipes, respect for my neighbors), all the smoke is all but gone. Here's pics of the turd, promise I'll clean up the engine compartment now after pulling the intake three times. Thanks again all, might make it to StrayKat500 after all.
