i know the 1955 and newer chevy steering wheels work on gm splined columns but are there any other makes that i can use that have the same spline count? i've seen some neat ford and hudson wheels i'd like to use. also are all 1955 and up gm (buick, olds, caddy etc.) wheels splined?

oh and i did a search but found nothing so if you know of a thread just post it. thanks

Don't know for sure on all of them, but I think early ford is different, and I put a hudson on an F-1 column, so they are probally out. Years back I made a steel adapter for gm splines, because I didn't like the aluminum one's, and when ever I sell a car or truck I built, I always keep it, and it has fit from 46 up to the 80's gm spline for sure. Hope this helps somewhat.

The majority of GM wheels are splined...and no, they don't all interchange. Early Cadillac splines are different than Chevy...and Ford splines prolly wouldn't fit a Chevy (or GM) column...in my estimation, mixing and matching wheels would amount to trial and error...good luck...!!!

  4. I had the entire steering shaft/box out of a 55 DeSoto. I cut the shaft off at the box and used the DeSoto shaft/steering wheel in my 32 and fabed a column (from the Tech section here). Well, I sold the steering wheel for a small fortune, which left me with the shaft/outer fabricated column in the 32. Long story short, I had a spare pontiac wheel out of my 61 Catalina and it slipped EXACTLY right on 55 DeSoto shaft splines like Factory. FYI...

Very few people will see your question here.

I would start a new thread with a good explaination in the title. Something like; What column spline will fit a 51 Hudson steering wheel.

    Worth a try.

Either that, or if you have an older junkyard nearby, take your wheel to try to find a few cars that are missing the wheel, but still have the column?

I fab steering shafts on the side. It's a helluva' lot easier to cut splines to match a wheel than trying to find the perfect fit by mixing and matching. Prices are very reasonable too.

Hmmm...my 3 spoke Bell on a Chevy column...that's beyond fantasy. I think of that GM multiplug plastic thing on the left side of the Chevy mast jacket and wonder...I wonder!
WTF is a Chevy steering column doing within .45 range of the HAMB journal?
O.K., guys...it all fits... but some shit DON'T FIT!
Sorry to all the street guys...just an old burr under my saddle. Hey. Tilt that wheel one more time, Denehey...Cool.....
