I think my brother told me once that the Starlight coupes had a big back window and regular coupes were small back window.
I could ask him but then he would want to buy it ,then we would have to go get it, and stop at nudie bars all the way there and back .

I just don't know how many more Road Trips like that I have left in me.

Not extremely rare...Starlight coops are very cool tho...that appears to be a '50/'51...had one in HS...way back in 1959...back then they were Grampa's cars...no cool factor! Today, different story...that one appears pretty good body wise...how's the bottom?

Pretty sure that is a business mans coupe. Only a front seat and a huge trunk. Probably more rare than the standard coupe.

Yeah, it's probably pretty rare. Only production figures I could find for Business Coupes were for a '49 model, and that was about 2300 copies.

That looks a little later, either a '50 or '51. Get it. Hack it up. :D

  9. I have no listing for a business coupé, but there IS a 3 p***enger, which might be the same.

Anyway, production totals for the 3 p***enger:
    1950 -
    Custom line: 1,562
    Deluxe line: 2,082
    Regal line: 849

    1951 -
    Custom line: 2,429
    Deluxe line: 961
    Regal line: 373
All the above are six cylinder. There was officially ONE 1951 V8 model 3 p***enger coupé built.
    This one probably isn't it.

the Stude rears look the same to me from '49 to '52, but agree, by what's left of the tail light it looks like the bullet nose model '50 or '51

were business coupes available all four years?

the Champions had little sixes, the Comanders had first big sixes then little V8s

and the Landcruisers were longer in the front...

  11. Thank you, guys.

Yes, it is a bullet nose... sorry to have left that out.

I guess I have to buy it, now...

Actually, I might buy the whole damn yard...
Wish me luck on that. :)

  15. That's an Army Hat car (don't ask long story). I think that they are more rare than they used to be. They make pretty cool rods. Lst one I saw for sale around here was about 900.00 and that was 2 years ago. Not that that is the going price you just don't see 'em worth building up for grabs to much.

If I needed a project I'd probably look into one. That take a lot to make right, the suspension needs upgradeing if you want to drive it very hard, and that one looks to need about everything else, but they are pretty cool.

That there is a 51 Studebaker Champion Custom Business coupe. On the grand scheme of things, they are pretty rare, there are lots of the 2 door sedans( like the one beside it) and lots of starlight coupes. If you picked it up, i'm sure you'd have no problem selling it again, as there is a pretty good following for those with both rodders and restorers. Cool find! Evan

if you get it dirt cheap and need ta turn it to make a buck, my ol man in MN may be interested in it. he has a thing for bullet nose studes, has one business coupe already. they're rare, but not very desireable.

[ I was out looking today[kinda dodging work] and ran upon about 15-18 old cars. They are mostly for sale but a little high i think. Anyway one of the cars that was not for sale was a 1950[ I think] commander convertable. The guy claims it's one of a handful known. He seemed pretty knowledgable and was a guy not trying to get rich. actually he probably is pretty well off. Could that be correct on the studie? I'm going back when i have a little time to talk with him. He had 4 -53 lincoln capri's, 1 of them was a convert. 51, 52 pontiac hardtops, 55 safari wagon[ i'm trying to work a deal on it]. A 55 pontiac hardtop, a couple of 55-56 olds, 1 convert, 55, 56 mercury hardtops, 50 something convert. packard, a couple of 56 to 58 mopars. he said he had about the same amount at the house. i just happened upon him today. I'll get a list and prices if anybodies interested. These cars are from good to very good shape body wise. He also had a 53 buick skylark convert, 53 buick 2 door super, 53 buick more door.he also had a kick*** 55 crown vic, cruiser skirts, real spots. most of these cars has been done up years ago it looks like. I'm going back saturday. TP

[ I guess I kinda got off track. The commander convertable is the big studebaker. Is it that rare? Sorry about getting off topic. TP

That is a Business Coupe and I'm guessing that it's a 51 Custom model from the trunk lid "bullet". All bullet nose business coupes were Champions and powered by inline flathead 6 engines except for the one only Commander that was built in 1951, the first year of Studebaker's V-8 engine.

My web site, Bullet Nose Paradise, has several modified business coupes and a couple of them are chopped too. The URL is http://www.citlink.net/~junge/BC/aaBC.htm

According to my reference material, Studebaker built 2,867 Commander Convertibles in 1950 and 3,770 of them in 1951. The 50 would have a large 6 cylinder engine and a longer wheelbase than the Champion. The Champs are more common with 9.362 being built in 1950 and 4,742 built in 1951. Studebaker sold more Commanders in all body styles in 1951 than 1950 because of the new 232 cubic inch V-8 that produced 120 HP.

Why don't you make it into a cool looking convertible like this one that Klazurfer photoshopped for me. I think his version made from a 2 door sedan photo is one of the coolest looking Studebaker rides I have seen and hope that someone does one some day.

  29. The business coupe is fairly rare, but was made all the years they did this body style - the higher the trim level, the lower the production.

I know where there is a '52 2dr hardtop that could be saved - just hang a bullet nose on it and go have fun -
