1954 Chevy p/u. stock drivetrain w/ 3 speed manual transmission.

I've been trying to go through my truck and replace a bunch of gaskets to keep it from constantly "marking it's territory". I was hoping to get a little advice on one. I have a slow drip coming from the rear of the transmission. As I've done more and more research I think it's technically part of the torque tube. This is my first project car, and I've never really torn apart a transmission before, nor had I even seen a torque tube before I bought this truck. Anyway. If you open the link, Fig 77. shows where the leak is coming from (drips from where the "G" is in "packing". Is it as simple as replacing the felt packing and washers? I have seen comments about transmission leaks allowing oil/fluid to leak down through the torque tube and into the rear differential. Is that even possible??!?!

    Thanks,

  2. It looks like the hardest part will betaking it apart and removing the outer cap.
Trans and rear rearends of that era used the same fluid.....

  3. i dont think so.....the torque tube is dry.....so the notion of the tube filling up with a fluid from one end to the other doesnt make sense to me....both the units on the end are sealed units....the diff is sealed and the trans is sealed.... both ends have some sort of splined shaft or yoke that the drive shaft attaches to and on my 37 their is one u joint at the trans end and a carrier bearing. now they could very well be leaking at both ends badly and that is the dripping you are getting. i bet the leak in your case is from the bushing that the trans main shaft is going through and the felt washer on the torque tube is not the main problem

Not that this is right or wrong, but this is more the problem that I am afraid of.... I could tighten/replace the oil seal mentioned above, but I'm afraid that it may not be the root of the problem, just the visible symptom. I know that there are about a billion of these transmissions floating around, so someone must know something....

Here's a blowup view of the transmission that might help.
