I have my wheels down to bare metal and I'm about to rattle-can them.

Should I be painting the bead seating area? Again, it is currently in bare metal (would like to prevent future rust).

    Thanks

There is no reason not to. Unless you like the look of rust stains all over your tires.

Right. I was just looking to avoid leaks, and I've read painting the area can cause them.

If you can bead blast the entire wheel and then paint it completely inside and out. If you can't bead blast it, sand it really good.

Thats funny, when I get pitted steel rims I use paint to seal them.
New car aluminum wheels that are all corroded from the chemicals used on the roads here in PA, also get the same treatment on the beads.
I clean the beads, spray the paint on untill it drips off and put the tire on while it is still wet.
    I would paint them

You should not need it, unless the beads are SUPER pitted!

Once I de-rust something I always paint it, especially what will rust again. I use dish or car wash soap on my cleaned rubber for mounting ease & sealer.

if i'm going to paint rims without dismounting i just paint them and wipe the tire clean with solvent. like on tractor tires, work trucks, daily beaters and resale detailing.

Why do you think you need sealer? If the rims are smooth, you won't need it.

Another way to paint with a tire mounted is to rub the inside edge of the tire with grease. The paint won't stick, and will get in all those little nooks and crannies that wiping is a pain on..
Wipe off after paint is dry.
