There is no reason for an H pipe on an inline 6 because the firing order never has two adjacent cylinders firing in sequence. The same cannot be said of a V8 unless it has a flat crank, like a Ferrari.

Jag and other race cars with inline 6's just had twin three-cylinder exhaust systems with no crossover and they were some of the sweetest sounding motors ever.

I have ran the exhaust about 4 different ways on my 54 trying to get that right tone,

the best I have had it is with 1 3/4" tubing with straight pipes out back all the way, sounds sooo good and has an amazing rap to it. no mufflers just ruckus. that said though my engine has higher comp and a nasty cam.

I did the same set up on a buddy of mines 216, did a split manifold instead of headers and ran straight pipes all the way out. sounded great and really wasnt too loud.

if you want the optimum sound on a stovebolt with mufflers, run straight pipes all the way out, bomb around town that day, the next morning get your car up in the air and notice on each exhaust where the color change from the heat stops.

where ever that is is the ideal place to run your mufflers

also dont dump your exhaust under your car. you will hate the buzzing noise from your floors vibraiting. stovebolts have that sweet spot that buzz's at cruising rpms

    I have done this before.

I say do them right. if your car is that low then it needs to be notched and then you will have enough room to run over you rear.
I dont suggest under but if you do then make a coupler before the rear so if you have to do anything you dont have to pull the entire exhaust out.

    Have done this before too...

    anyways hope this helps:)

oh and remember 1 3/4" or 1 1/2 tubing is perfect for a stovebolt, gives it a great amount of crackle!

and you can run your exhaust through your rear bumper and you never have to worry about dragging them off!

  4. I have a two into one y-pipe right after the headers then a single pipe running back to a one in and two out magna flow muffler with two pipes out the rear. One pipe taks up much less room than two, running 1 3/4 pipes and it does a whole lotta popping and noise making and you know it is a six and not a 8

I've got 1.5" pipe from the Fenton headers running down both sides. Had the "old school" muffler guy install this. Had him exit before the back tire on my pu running 18" glass packs. Doesn't sound bad, purrs nicely, but doesn't rap at all. I'm gona drop the pack on the passenger side and run the pipes out the back. Hoping the one 18" pack is not too long.

The stock pipe will work on the rear header.

I'm currently making up the front downtube with misc 2" bent tube from speedway. Lots of cutting, fitting and welding as there's a lot of crap in the way. I'm working on a 53.

i've had a few of these cars... 54' and a 52' and now a 53' chev. I've have in the past(cause i had money from other car's) bought the exhaust system from national chevy... they are set up to run with fentons, and go all the way back... i usually go with a steel pack muffler over a glass pack. and i run the mufflers backwords.. there is a marked in/out.. i put the out towards the front....i know sounds stupid but it raps louder than my buddy's 283... which really pissed him off! I will say that i have had slight problems with there system.. it is not designed for a lowered car and i have had to play with it to get it tucked up outta the way. My cars are usually pretty darn low and scrape....and no air ride. gonna be doing another one here soon, gonna try something new, i think i'm gonna run just 1 muffler on the front header and nothing on the back, and make a real short system, with bellflower tips.. if its too nuts i will switch to full exhaust. I'd like to have the car super low this time and not worry about the exhaust... here is a shot of my 52'
