Checking out an AOD in my garage, and I thought I was missing parts. Maybe not. The transmission in question is a 2wd Ford AOD removed from a running driving 1988 Lincoln Town Car.

Where the shift arm is, there is a square threaded stud hanging out the middle, maybe 1/2 an inch long. Im guessing that is the kickdown? From what I can see it is..soo...

I put a 1/4" wrench on it and moved it back and forth. It went back and forth with a click in each direction, unlike the kickdowns I was familiar with where it would smoothly go back, then snap back into place when tension was released. Is this OK? It came from a running driving car I parted (I drove it, ran fine) and was a friends daily before that, so I dont get it if/why something would be wrong now.

Second...right above that is a circular plug facing upward. Its got a few pins in it, but unfortunately I dont have the other side. Is that an electronic lockup?

    Thanx in advance!

What year did the transmission come from? SOm have an electronic lock some don't. I think 94' up are electronic...? Are you using this with a carburator? You will need to fabricate or buy the shift down linkage.

Check this website it is informative.

Its a 1988, and I was planning on using a Lokar kit in essence of time whenever I plan on finally using it.

[Panting]......I just ran outside to look at the '88 5.0/AOD I just took out of a Gr Marquis.....The lever with the 'clicks' is the shifter. The other lever that springs back [actually forward] is the TV [Throttle Valve] that controls the upshifting/downshifting. Remember, it's not "kickdown linkage," its TV, which MUST follow the arc of the throttle, not just get tripped when you floor it. A Lokar kit will take care of it. The circular plug is the backup light/neutral safety switch.

What Al Von says is right, sounds like the shift lever has been removed. My AOD is an 88 Lincoln and has the TV lever coming forward from around the shifter. There's a service port on the other side of the trans case to hook your pressure gauge up to when setting the TV cable up.

No no, shift lever is there and accounted for, but, right through the center is where this threaded stud is. Does anyone have a pic of where the lever for the kickdown connects? Does it go through the center of the shift lever? If so thats it. But....when I put the wrench on it, it doesnt move smoothly and spring back, it just clicks once to the left, and once back to the right...with the wrench moving it both ways.

The centre rod, which is springy, without a detent, is the throttle linkage for the OD. This has to be adjusted properly or the transmission will shift into OD at the wrong time. A typical throttle body linkage will have THREE cables affixed to it - the foot pedal (controlled by the driver), the cruise box (which holds position using vacuum), and the AOD (which mechanically communicates the transmission how much the throttle is applied).

I'm in the process of swapping transmissions on my wife's Mustang (which lost the OD band, and has an obscene amount of metal filings on the magnets in the pan), and had to open both transmissions back up to swap the shift arm (the one with detents), because I realized the linkages were slightly different. Did this fool thing after doing the trans filter and sealing the pan with a new gasket before pulling the old transmission to realize I needed to get back in and messed up the gasket in the process. Doh.

did anyone answer your question unionvillehaunt. i was checking on an AOD im swapping into a mustang and the inner TV lever does not move smoothly it takes a bit of force to move it in either direction and it does not return to a position it just stays where i put it. im worried the cable will not be able to move it without breaking. is this normal? is the ****** OK to use? does anyone know?
