I'm still trying to come up with a way to make the 69 brake upgrade on my 53 Dodge truck work, and so far, the only alternatives I have is having going back to the 53 brakes and hubs or having my spindles sleeved to fit the 69 hub.

Will 1969 D100 spindles work properly on my 53 B4B straight axle? I think the JY might still have the 69 donor truck.

Can't you use the 69 axle under your 53 truck? How about changing the bearings, some bearing place (Berry Bearing have a web site?) may have bearings that have the correct inner race and the correct outer race, or is there another issue? Gene

How about a change to Dodge Dakota? I've heard that it is THE conversion to have, nowadays!

I think your best bet would be to do as 50dodge4x4 suggested. See if you can find a set of bearings with the inner dimension needed for the '53 spindle and the outer dimension needed for the '69 hub.

Measure the dimensions you need and do some searching, or take the dimensions (or the bearings themselves) down to a decent parts store and see if they can look them up.

Some brake conversions also use sleeves on the spindles to adapt later hubs/brakes, you could also look into having a set of sleeves made at a machine shop.

You might also want to contact Rusty Hope or Scarebird to see if they have any info on a brake kit for the '53 Dodge, they may not be able to help with the '69 brake swap but at least you might get some other options for a brake upgrade.

Its a big jump from a brake upgrade to a full frame swap (to the Dakota).

  6. Why not a front frame clip swap? The swap to a '72-93 dodge 1/2 clip is pretty easy can can be finished in a long weekend. You get disc brakes, IFS and power steering, and the last 3 frames I've picked up I got for under $100 each. Check out Sweptline.com for info on the swap on the '61-'71 trucks.

There is an ad on Ebay for a kit to convert to disc brakes, for $120. You still have to buy the calipers and rotors, but I think it is a great deal. It is item 390148661713 from Scarebird Cl***ic Disc Brakes.
