I pulled apart the rear end of my 53 Chevy 210 and one of my leaf springs is pretty ate through with rust. So now I'm on the hunt for another one pretty quickly, are there any alternative leaf springs I can go with for that stock rear end? Thanks!
I think you have to stay with 49/54 but could be wrong. There should be someone with a decent pair who is bagging their 53/54 that would make you a right deal on them though.
Is your main leaf in good shape? If so try finding a leaf spring out of a more modern car with the same width and similar weight and make up a new spring pack. You may need to experiment a little with spring rate. If you have a press and a bath room scale you can make a make shift spring rate tester. You may also want to take both springs to a spring shop and have them redone. It usually doesn't cost that much.
I am hoping to see if someone has a used set local that I can just pick up. I don't mind getting off line if I can get it cheap enough and pay shipping.
I would be suprised that rust just ate through one and the rest are ok.Anyways i used St loius spring. They have all of the patterns and sizes and make them pretty quick.I had mine made and shipped to Minnesota in three days.Price was as cheap or cheaper than any other supplier. They did mention they make them for quite a few distrubutors.
Well, I don't know if this makes a difference but I'm looking to add 3 inch lowering blocks and a set of gabriel hijackers...will that make a difference as far as the support of the leaf spring...it should techinically right?
They are narrow 1 3/4 springs meant to use a torque tube. More common are 2" springs and blocks. A good trick is to get the flat 3 or 5 spring pack springs from the front of an older Dodge Ramcharger. You will have to fab new mounts but they work great and lower the car.
If you buy a new one (and only one).... it will not be the same arch as your old spring because of age and sag....usually need to replace in pairs....your best off finding an old used spring if you are lucky enough, it'll be closer to matching your other old spring...
San Antonio is certainly big enough to have a spring shop or two. They cater to heavy duty trucks but usually have the materal and ewuipment to make new leaves for about anything. Try your local yellow Pages.
Yup the above post is correct Ace Spring and bolt has some and so does San Antonio Brake and clutch both are in the vicinity of the downtown brodway area, and they know all about leaf springs. Including the cl***ics thats what they specialize in. Got my front leaf springs for my 40 chevy truck rearched at San Antonio Brake and Clutch. By the way i would sell you the leafs that i got but i think their to narrow for your setup, but try out those to local shops they usually have some laying around
Thanks for the info guys, if I can't find anything I may just have to run what I have until I can afford to bag the back of the car. LOWMOJO: Thanks for the info, I will give ACE a call.
If your gonna put blocks in then how do you feel about just taking out one spring on each side. I did on my 54 worked well.
