Projects Purchase--54 4Dr New YorkerDLX Hemi--1953 Pontiac 2 door chieftain

  1. There's a lot of damn goofy answers in this thread. What kind of moron thinks cars that have sat under cover for 10 years, that are solid and run, are only good for parts? The guy who thinks "restoring" a car means you wash it, wax it, and give it a tune up?

Old Cars Report 8/10 issue -
#6 = parts car, #5 = complete, needs total restoration; #4 = runs, servicable, needs work

Pontiac - #6 $650, #5 $2000, #4 $3250, deduct about $250-$350 for the missing bumper/grille. That's figured for a 2dr sedan, not a hardtop, also. Bumper is Pontiac only. Pontiac is relatively easy to do a drivetrain upgrade in, there are several later rearends that bolt right in, lots of room for a V8, disc kit for the front brakes if you want also. Saginaw 605 box is relatively easy to adapt also.

Chrysler - motor alone is worth $1000 if it runs, will be a 331 long bell Hemi, not the most desirable but it's the big Chrysler motor so parts aren't so bad. Book says #6 $800, #5 $2500, #4 $4100. But being a 4-door it will be harder to sell, there are guys who are into them but it's mostly because "that's the car Dad/Mom/Uncle Joe/whoever had" sort of thing. But if it's nice, have the seat redone, clean it up, fix the brakes, and see where it goes.

Both of these sound like they could be #4 cars with brake overhauls and general cleanup from storage, not quite nice enough to show but nice enough to drive and enjoy as-is if you wanted. The biggest headache would be trying to get that brushed on paint off the Pontiac, but with care you might be able to do it.

I only buy a new Old Cars Report every couple years or so, the values don't fluctuate enough to need one every other month when they come out but you can buy a new one at most bigger magazine racks if you want.

Actually the '54 NYer Deluxe was scheduled to get the short tail 4 bl engines, the standard NYer was to get the 2 bl long tail, but where few long tail '54s are reported they may have gotten 4 bl engine also.

Did you buy the cars? Like to come by and see them if you live nearby Marysville. We live south of Manhattan. PM me.

A 53 Pontiac grill that is nice is hard to find - I've been looking on Ebay for one for 6 years - There was one that was rechromed that sold for $1500. Most are junk due to the poor quality chrome at that time and the thin metal that was used. I'm hoping to build one by acquiring NOS parts and be into it for under a grand.....GOOD LUCK

I think it will turn out nice. Need to take apart rockers on motor and inspect do brakes. And shine it up some more.
