Now that the baby is crawling and I'm starting to recover from hand surgery, I thought I'd get back to working on my '50 Desoto. I have a '76 LA360 from a Ram truck ready to put in but I need mounts to install it. I have the motor mounts from the truck (which are larger than the car style, I'm told). What I don't have are the frame mounts. Speedway, etc. don't have them and I can't find a pattern on the net. Anyone here make thier own? -or- Who sells 'em? Thanks.
There are several styles of factory engine brackets that can be used that will give you more options for the frame mounts, but I think you will be fabbing your own pieces. With minor tweaks even EarlyHemi mounts could be used: .
I sold a marine set of 318 motor mounts on Ebay a while back. They were the cats *** for a hotrodder. Fully adjustable!
While you are looking keep in mind that if you are keeping the original steering, you may have interference between it and the exhaust minufold. One way to deal with it is to offsett the engine to the p*** side by about 2 inches. When everything is in it's barely noticable.
check with ch***is engineering for the motor brackets and rubber mounts (check link below) I usually set the engine in place and build my own brackets and use the CE mount and build around the steering if necessary, and move the engine and trans off set to the p*** side by about 1-1 1/2" to clear the steering if needed. hope this helps. Thanks Gents. Actually that all is VERY helpful. The CE especially looks good and is right in my budget. Let's say, for instance I do want to fab these myself. The angle of the 4-hole tab on the motor mount (mine only have 3 holes) appears to be at nearly a 45-degree angle to the horizontal piece that takes the rubber isolation pad. Is that correct? What is the exact angle?
I am basically cheep so I just build the brackets that bolt to the engine(yes you just use 3 mounting holes) I make a pattern from cardboard and then make the pieces that bolt to the block and then i make a pattern for the horizontal piece and weld them together, I buy the CE mounts and then after the engine and trans are lined up I make the pieces for the frame and bolt them together with the CE mount and where they touch the frame I weld them up. I have a 52 Chrysler that came with the 331 Hemi. Installed a 1964 273 Plymouth V-8, using the same mounts, with old style center dump exhaust manifolds without any issues with the steering box or the distributor hitting the firewall. Go Fish
I just made my own. Didn't take me too long either. Yes, the mount tabs on the engine block are at a 45 degree angle to the frame...so quite simple. I made them GM style and will use either eurethane bushings or hockey pucks for vibe dampening. Will post pics soon for other mopar guys, in case they want to make some too.
