Back when automobiles were still just smoky, noisy, EXPENSIVE toys for the rich, the horse still ruled transport -- even fun, family transport! :)

[That is a plank road, probably in Oregon or Washington. The reason for them was they were cheaper than gravel. There was once an extensive lumber industry in the Northwest. The roads made of small diameter logs were called "cordoroy" roads. They found plank road under U.S. 26 in Sandy, Oregon last summer while doing road repairs. QUOTE=jimi'shemi291;6461119][IMG]

I've seen bridges done like this, but not a stretch of roadway. This being WAY after
so-called "washboard" roads of logs, what would be the background story?

Thanks, 33-Chevy! I guess that makes sense. If you have timber out the wazoo, you'd use the cheapest material around to surface roads! You gain new insights all the time on the HAMB -- things you wouldn't otherwise think about.

Max, if my memory holds up, I think Jack like the Stearns. When he decided to try his hand at racing, Barney Oldfield (he later attested) decided to accept Johnson's challenge. He said it would be far better to whomp the boxing champ's ass WHILE he was new to competitive racing than to have to face him after he (Jack) had a few years of experience!

In a back-handed way, I think that was a compliment to Jack. But, Jack laid off after losing two in a row to Barney, and that was what Barney wanted.
