I have fond memories of the Wednesday Special in the town I grew up in. 5 gallons of high test gas for $1.00, got pumped for you, opened your hood, checked your oil, belts, hoses, window washer fluid, washed the front and rear window, checked the wiper blades, tire pressures and adjusted it for you, looked under your car for you to make sure nothing was leaking. And all this was done with a smile and a have a nice day and come back soon.....:( I want 1965 back!

  2. I have a real problem calling the garbage coming out of the nozzles in any state " gasoline ".

Another vote for winter blend. Back in WV, that **** was horrible. Made my carb's inlet valve stick all the time. They have some version here in the desert too. Idle goes up about 500 rpm in the fall, and a real, noticable drop in power.

You can't blame the EPA for winter and summer blends.
We blend winter grade through about the end of February. It has a higher vapor pressure, for better cold starting. It's usually controlled by the percentage of butane or pentane in the blend. During the warmer months the vapor pressure drops to less than 8PSI to prevent vapor lock.
This has been going on since probably the second winter refiners started selling gasoline. It was developed by the ASTM. a consortium of auto makers and gasoline refiners, which still works to fit fuel to the cars, when the government lets it. ASTM was partly responsible for putting lead in gasoline and for taking it out. They also coordinate testing methods of fuels by manufacturers to ensure consistency from one brand to another and one refinery to another.
If your car dieseled after a fill-up, you didn't get what you paid for. :mad:Complain to the station owner and the state. In Texas it's under the weights and measures folks, I think, but the station owner can tell you. Add some octane boost, retard the timing a couple of degrees until you can fill up with some real premium gas. (The kids in today's stations don't have a clue what "ethyl" or "high test" means)
Run a name brand gasoline from a busy station to get the best, freshest gasoline. Gas is only good for about six to eight months before it starts to deteriorate, so drive 'em, don't let good gas go bad. :)

I never buy Shell gas. Any oil company that supplies our enemies with fuel doesn't deserve my business. Yes, they did supply the North Vietnamese with fuel as our pilots were instructed specifically not to bomb or strafe the SHELL OIL TANKERS in the Hanoi rail yards. Just ask me how I know....

  7. No kidding,,when a few drops spill on the ground it almost evaporates quicker than acetone or laquer thinner....
The **** doesn't even come close to smelling like gas either.

I was unaware of Oregons no self serve rules while on the road with my 5th wheel. BUT at 3 different stops / fill ups, the attendant ASKED ME if I wanted the windshield cleaned. At least these folks were gainfully employed.

here in Oregon there's some wacky law preventing people from pumping their own gas (exception being diesel and motorcycles). i swear the law is just there to provide employment to the otherwise unemployable...

i've had one of these delightful individuals proceed to put 87 in my car after specifically saying 92....
and had one guy start putting 92 in my suburban after saying 87.

now, i get out of the car and make damn sure they're doing what they're supposed to be doing.

You guy's are funny real funny:cool: I don't have points in that car, however I know what your talking about. The guy earlier in the thead was right the idle was way up on the motor.

No more run on. Today I drove it like I stole it and it's fine. I did put some sunnoco in after I got low.

I am older than most here and remember The floating balls in the Sunnoco pump the bells ringing when you drove over the lines. All these jobs that low skilled kids could get when young are drying up.

The one thing I remember and loved about the old gas station was they were open for busness late at night. I remember my dad's 57 Ford convert was runing funny so we pull in to the ESSO and the guy looks under then pulls it on the lift. It took 10 min and we were out. I felt very safe on the road in those days. Look what you got now, some joke in a booth.

all gas stations need to have attendents, the best entry level job going, at 14 i was working close to 50 hours a week and still in school, i got in alot of trouble hanging out around older guys, drinking and such, but i would never change a thing even if i could, greese from one end to the other every day, went from pumping gas to the only mechanic and a motor vehicle inspection licence in the span of 7 years.

Thank you. People think I'm nuts when I speak of the Shell/Viet Nam connection. Not sure, but I think Shell is a Dutch company with a US subsidiary.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION ABOUT SHELL’S ROLE IN THE VIETNAM WAR

Between 1972 and 1975, the last three years of the Vietnam War, Shell Vietnam (the local “operating company” of the Shell Group) controlled half of Vietnam’s oil supply. A book by Louis Wesseling, the President of Shell Vietnam during that period, revealed that Shell failed properly to control the oil shipments which flowed through indirect channels to the Vietcong. According to his book “Fuelling the war: revealing an oil company’s role in Vietnam”, Shell knowingly employed as a manager a notorious former senior police official with a “fearsome and well-deserved reputation” who “had already shown his inclination to settle security matters by military action with little compunction about killing, innocents along with suspects”.

Yep and each time they fill the tank truck at the distribution point they add the additives for the brand that they are taking the load to.
My brother in law delivers gas in the Seattle area and he says that Costco is one of the strictest places when it comes to delivering gas. That is where he buys his own gas.

I try not to buy gas at old stations with old tanks no matter how quaint or cute they are unless there is no good option. In the past that is where I have had problems attributed to the gas I bought including dirty gas or water in the gas or a real poor grade of gas that caused issues.
Locally I usually buy at Costco, Safeway or one of two Texaco stations that have high volumes of gas sold every day.

If a product is better than another there is reason for an increase in price. There is just no justification for this gas to keep increasing in price. It makes me think of my Grandfather, I remember him telling me that they tried to increase the price of something in the 1930's and 40's The people protested so bad that the item dropped in value and almost became worthless.

These companies are rich, they don't need to do this to us. It's hurting the country. We are doing nothing about it. We are just taking it up the rear. It comes a time when something must happen. I like driving my Hot Rod. I don't want to change that, when we were young gas was the last thing on our minds when it came to cruzing. SAD:(

    Interesting thread.

Out here in Kalifornia we have this crazy "clean" blend I'm told is specific to Kalifornia and that's why a gallon of regular is $4.30.

Filling the gas tank in my sedan takes $80!!! I used to drive quite a bit just for fun...just cruise around enjoying my hot rod. Can't do that anymore because I can't afford to waste that much $$$$. Kinda depressing.

It look like the only guys getting rip off at the pumps are the people that follow the people that shut off the pump and drain the hose into their tank.
