Want to go to open drive line in my '36, what happens to rear wishbone if torque tube is eliminated? Do I have to use parallel leaf springs?
NOT an acceptible solution to that problem. Radius rods, even the relatively beefy 35-36 units, are not built to withstand the rotational force (axle wrap) that comes from even moderate braking and acceleration. If you're going to split them, you need to add some sort of a torque arm to supplement them.
take this advice about the torque arm! you wont get away with out using one. your Radius rods will probably crack and will never keep a good pinon angle. do a search you will find plenty of info.....
Thanks for responding, I see a torque arm offered by HOT ROD WORKS that bolts to the top of differential and goes to the end of the radius rods, but then what supports those pieces when you tie them together?
Install parallel leaf springs and convert the banjo rear end to open drive shaft( probably Speedway Motors). Rebuild the transmission with truck gears so an open drive shaft will work. Other than that.......
Easy fix----Use a Posies conversion kit to use semi eliptical springs, add another cross structure (2X3X.180 wall rectanular tube) use 4 1/2 heim joints, weld tabs to cross structure & axle housing.-------Don
Here is an example of utilizing 36' bones which are split then made into a set of triangulated ladder bars.
