Check this out, easy simple and effective. http://www.aircooledtech.com/tools-on-the-cheap/soda_blaster/
I'm going to try this on my thermoquad bases and tops, and maybe some other little bits. Thanks for the link ! Derek
Just bought 3x2 for the HOT ROD. I am for sure going to try this, thank's for posting............PINCHER
I did it, rebuilding my Weber 48 IDA. Worked like an absolute charm. Rinsed clean, no toxic ****, and dirt cheap. Cost me a grand total of 4 bucks!
great idea. i use soda in my bead blast cabinet from time to time. works great for small stuff. i don't run the vacuume when using soda because it plugs up the filter very quick.
I tried it and it didn't work that well for me. I emptied the baking soda box quickly and got minimal results on the 97 carb that I was blasting. I used the same set-up, including the 60 gallon compressor.
You have to have a way to adjust the soda flow. I bought a small hand blaster from HF that had an adjustable nozzle.....$9.95 on sale. I use this for my carb soda blasting and for bead blasting in my cabinet. I have another one with a ceramic tip for sandblasting manifolds.
You have to jiggle the tube (heh heh) going into the box of baking soda every now and then to get it flowing, but I didn't need to have the flow adjustable. I used it pretty much exactly as pictured, and the parts came out like new.
http://www.harborfreight.com/21-oz-hopper-gravity-feed-spot-blaster-gun-95793.html I run soda thru this spot blaster, and I love it!!! Great way to clean carbs before rebuild, I just wash them off with water and forced air dry them (blow gun) Only problem is your covered in a fine white powder when done, and I hate the taste of baking soda. Keith
i have made this blaster, i didnt use it to blast i used it as a vacuum cleaner, the tube was small enough to slip into a sparkplug hole after i ran a tap in the hole, worked great.
BTTT because it's simple and cool. I cut the ends off an ink refill to make the nozzle smaller and used 3/8 hose. It took a whole box of soda($2.50), but the AFB on my Nailhead looks great. The carb was filthy with varnish and greasy crud. Now all I have to do is get the secondaries free and install the rebuild kit. Beats the heck out of soaking for hours and scrubbing with a wire brush. Be aware you will likely wear through the tip of the hose over the course of blasting a heavily soiled 4 barrel. YMMV
Sure, Paint and gunk off just about anything. It's just another media used for blasting. Doesn't do much to rust.
I sand blast iron rusty bases of carbs with sugar, as a complement. Just clean with water = no more blasting media, instead of sand.
