I got an old Ford 94 carb along with a manifold in a package deal for my Model A banger engine. I cleaned and rebuilt it as best I could. I cannot seem to get it tuned. The engine dies out, hesitates, backfires through carb and exhaust and needs the choke on to idle. I remember messing with some motorcycle carbs for months, finally replacing them and having the bike run perfectly. I don't want to go through that again. I'm thinking about buying a new two barrel so can start fresh. I just got the engine running and I'd like to at least have the questions about the carb resolved so I can look at other issues. Speedway sells a modern version of a Stromberg 97 and an Edlebrock 94. I remember back in the old days I ran 97's on a car. The carb was simple and foolproof. Is the 97 the better carb for my application. Is there any reason to spend more money for a 94? Thanks.
Befor i spent any money i'd borrow another known good carb and try it, it sounds like you have a problem with the engine. Backfire thru carb then exhaust sounds like valve train adjustment, it'll kinda idle with choke seems like vacuum (it is getting air from somewhere) and also with a vacuum leak it'll idle right down to zero rpm. Along with the valve thing when a backfire thru carb it is generally the ignition is retarded. In short, to me there are symptoms of more than one thing is amiss and i cannot think of what could be wrong in a carb to cause firstly a backfire thru the carb and then thru the exhaust - carbs are kinda stupid and they can't change thier effects, if they do something wrong then they continue to do it wrong until you sort taht problem out. On the other hand, i have been curious about the edelbrock myself.
Thanks, OJ! I really don't have anyone to borrow a good carb from. Wish I did. Getting a new one seems my only option. I've used starter fluid to look for vacuum leaks. Can't seem to locate any. I have set and rechecked the timing several times. It's pretty simple with these four bangers. The #1 plug fires when the timing pin goes in. As far as other problems, I'd like to address them, but I'd like to make sure the carb is good first. If I know that I can go forward. There are so many questions I have about this old carb. The trottle shaft seems to leak, but there's no change when I spray it with starter fluid. Is the accelerator pump working right? What's that fuel economizer thing? Jet sizes? etc. If I start playing around and replacing parts I might have used my whole summer in the garage instead of driving.
It sounds to me like you have a lean problem. If it idles only with the choke on and backfires out the carb...she is looking for more fuel. Did you have this engine running before you did the manifold swap, or is a new start up?
No, I put on the manifold and headers before I started it up. The stock stuff had a number of problems so I thought I'd just make the upgrades that I was planning on at the get go. I do have a gas tank in the trunk and an electric fuel pump that was giving me fits. I finally took off the regulator the previous owner suggested and with that the carb seems to be getting enough fuel. I've raised the float level, cleaned and re cleaned the jetting and, as I said, used starter fluid to look for air leaks. The move from a one barrel updraft to a two barrel downdraft seems like such an upgrade in fuel delivery I can't understand why it would be running lean.
before you put out any long green on the 9Super7 carbs....... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=465876 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=406348 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=405963 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=338582
^^^^ x2 Avoid the speedybill stuff and opt for the New Stromberg 97 re-engineered and re-produced by Clive Prew. http://www.stromberg-97.com/carburetion/carburetion.html -as for http\speedwaymotors.fraud, I don't even like going there for fear that my computer will get some form of non curable 'offshore' social disease. or to quote weasel, .
