To add to my previous post.... I've wrestled with Duece Roadster's advice for over a year now, but I just haven't brought myself to selling anything yet..... must be the hoarder mentality that runs in my family. So, yeah, definitely jail.

  2. It actually felt good to sell everything off. Here's why. My future projects were based upon the narrow range of parts I had collected and had plans for and it restricted my car choices. I have seen some non hot rod cars that have piqued my interest recently-even might do a resto on a dual wheel '50's style truck.

Over the last 2 years I have sold off 80% of my hot rod parts. The ones I had 5-6 of each. Let some one use them because I surely wasn't. I had these parts for future projects yet can barely finish my car and I'm 50.

Every time I went down in the ba*****t it was "what the f**k do I need all these for"

You're lucky, I could sell everything and only have enough to buy a coke and a packet of smokes!

Oh boy does this ever resonate with me. I could ***le this one "Confessions of a hoarder".

I got hit pretty hard by floods before last Christmas and lost a load of stuff and a couple of projects - one 99.9% finished. Flood insurance didn't cover it so I had to eat significant losses. It made me re***ess my priorities about the mountain of stuff I have been hoarding, and all the dream projects I will never finish. Way too many projects and nowhere near enough years left to finish them. So I figured out what I absolutely wanted to keep and the rest is going to be 'recycled'. 'Separation anxiety' is the next hurdle to be overcome, but if I am not going to use it, finish it or take it for a ride, then it needs to go. I would rather see it put to use and enrich someone else's life than continue to take up space and gather dust. I have to man up and face my OCD. I realized that the stuff was controlling my life not the other way around, and holding me prisoner. I shall be very relieved when the burden of possession is finally lifted and I can go back to the basics, have space to work and enjoy what I have.

With much of it, I 'had to have it' at the time, even though I had no actual need nor use for it. I just had to have it because it was rare, unusual or just plain odd. Having gone through the ownership experience, I can now part with it without regret....

smart move, better to get out from under the banks thumb. I used to hoard vinatge speed parts but decided I wasn't running a museum, nor did i like people going threw my garage to see what I had (only friends) so I came to the conclusion if I haven't touched it in over a year or it's not a spare for one of my race cars it goes. If something happened to me my wife would not want to be bothered with getting values or selling things...she'd just call 1-800- got junk and have it taken away. I wanted that stuff to got to a deserving person with cash. thats whats sad about alot of these car hoarders that refuse to sel cars saing their gonna restore them someday, well someday never comes and they rott intot he ground and are worthless or they die and there family calls a s****per to take them all.

Paying down your bills and spending time with the kids while they're young (and you're young) is never a bad idea. They'll be time later for your projects. Take lots of pics/video of the Gocart project.

  9. Like my 88 year old body man told me once as the lead pot was cooking right next to him "Its just another old piece a sheet metal boy"..... Giving the younger crowd a chance to keep our p***ion going is never a bad thing... I'm "married" to a certain 37 Ford in the back of the shop - the rest just come and go.
Were just "caretakers" of this old iron anyway guys - someone else is going to be rolling in your ride someday - guaranteed.

I'd like to make a gesture to help all of you reform yourselves. I am proud of you all for taking the steps to rid yourselves of all that useless iron. I will take any and all old cars, even those junk vettes. "not much s**** value in those anyway with those useless fibergl*** bodies" :D I tell you what, I'll extend that to motorcycles also, junk harley and indian stuff or Yale:D. Remember, I am here to help you.;):) Lippy, (Just doing his civic duty).

All the more reason to pull the trigger when the hypothetical became "ok, I'll agree to that deal." I figured I'd jump on it before either of us came to our senses. I probably could have done better had I sold everything individually, but then I'd have to find the time to get everything together, list them, etc, etc. Then there'd be all the fee's for selling on that wonderful auction site. I figure it was comfortable deal for both of us to come out ok in the end.

Thanks for all of the positive comments guys, it reinforces what I already felt was the right thing to do.

45 years ago I got married and my wife and I had an agreement. Household money would never be used for toys, but any money I earned by dealing, moonlighting and such was mine, no questions. I also agreed no more than one project at a time, if I want something bad enough I have to be willing to sell something.
It has worked out great,I have enough money stuck away from 45 years I could buy almost any car I see, So two years ago we bought a bank!!

Congratulations, being debt-free is the way to live. Makes car-building a bit tighter and longer but the lack headaches worrying about paying bills is worth the extra time in process.
I'm in the long process of cleaning and sorting the m*** of stuff in my garage so for the first time in 20-plus years I'll have somewhere besides the driveway to work. Now at the point of sifting the sell from the keep and feeling better every day.
