anybody know if a chevy 235 will bolt right into a 53 pontiac? if it doesn't, is there a kit out there that does make this possible?
dunno, but my '50 pontiac straight 8 will bolt right up. and at prices like i've got on it, you'd think i was INSANE!!!!! probably an adaptor plate somewhere to do that, but no idea on how you'd locate it. most likely easier to go with a V8, either SBC, or an older V8, based on availability of those old adaptors.
pontiacs and chevys had completely different frames and drivetrains until the mid 1960s midsize cars came along....so no, it won't bolt in. But with a torch, welder, etc, you can make anything fit.
Gant, get a grip on yourself, why would you want to put a 6 where an 8 should be,to do this swap you have to be pretty friendly with welders and tourches, put a Poncho in it
You didn't list a location, which might have helped some. Here's the deal - US made Pontiac uses a different frame and suspension, in this case 49-55 stuff interchanges. If your car was built in Canada, however, it basically *is* a Chevy, just has a Pontiac nose and trim - just like they started doing it in the 70's when you could barely tell one from the other. So if your car is a Canada model, which would have a 115" wheelbase and already have an OHV 6 in it, you can swap in a 235 pretty easily. If it's a US model, they're the same wheelbase wether 6-cyl or 8-cyl (49-52 are 120") so the 8 would work. 1954s and possibly some 1953s have provisions for the Pontiac V8 motor, making it a relatively easy install. There is loads of underhood room to install about any V8 you want, as long as you use the matching transmission. Just watch your clearance on the steering, 55-57's are tight, not sure how the 49-54 cars are. Consider swapping the rearend out too, they're on the weak side and with leaf springs you can swap in a lot of other stronger units (57 Pontiac housing, various Ford 9" styles, some later GM units as well).
