Looking good Dil. Hell mine isn't even a real gasser, but i'm going to drive the hell out of it. I'm 2" over the crank centerline limit and will never be "legal", but it will still look alot better than the "donk" gassers posted around here.
Thanks Guys. Takin her to her first show this coming weekend at the Pontiac Nationals here in Tulsa just to show off how she looks so far. Way far from done but I don't care. It's been a lot of work and I'm havin fun building it with my boy.
Not quite sure what to do with the grills. They are pitted pretty good but they are aluminum so I know they'll polish up descent. They look okay for now with the primer, but I know once I paint the car they will look pretty dingy. Anyone here have a preference for a good looking aluminum looking paint that might be better suited ? Rotten Johnny, Can you email me some pictures of your car. I'd like to see more of it and how you set it up. email me at superchargedill@yahoo.com thanks, Dil
4/24, I just wasn't diggin the way the chrome center caps were lookin on the rear wheels. I was remembering seeing some flat type caps on some old race cars somewhere so I started looking around the net trying to find something for my wheels. Found some for $120.00. They look cool but too much for my wallet right now so I did the next best thing with my primitive tools. I pulled a piece of aluminum out of one of my scrap metal boxes and went to town. First I traced the base of the American center cap with a marker. Then stuck a drill bit in the mounting holes to mark where I needed to drill. Then cut the main shape out with my jigsaw. Next was grind some of the extra off with my 4" grinder with a sanding disc, then touch it up with the dremel with a sanding drum. Next I drilled the holes with a 3/16" bit in the drill press, then over the top of those holes with a 5/16" to get some bevel for the bevel allen head mounting screws. Took me about an hour to make 2 of them. What do you think ? Like'em better than the chrome caps or not ?
4/26 got the rear shocks mounted so she's sittin on all 4's now. What do you think, sittin ok in the rear or does it need to be higher ?
4/28 I ordered a few pieces from MOON back when I picked up the car and got them installed tonight. 60's window crank, Gasser style gas pedal, and custom cut the other pieces to fit the e brake and also cut down the size of the brake pedal. My friend Nick gave me the MOON tach which is now mounted up on top of the dash where it's easy to see. I had to add a plate to the back of the gas pedal for the roller wheel on the throttle mechanism to roll on. The entire throttle linkage works beautiful.
4/30 Got the bumper on but the chrome was $hit so I hit the entire bumper with a 4" sanding disc to rough up the chrome so paint would stick. It turned out okay but I think the color I used looks like crap. Rustoleum Aluminum. It looks okay in the pictures but when you see it for real it doesn't look good at all. Definitely open for suggestions on a good silver that doesn't look like cheap chrome. This is the first time the car has seen sunlight since I brought her home last may. I trailered her down to Tulsa Raceway Park to show the Pontiac guys what I've been working on. There's still a lot of work, but making progress.
i got it from: noahperformance on ebay. it ain't, um, perfect. you should probably stick with the one you've got, unless you want to trade !!
5/2/11 Did a little fab and weld in the trunk area for the fuel tank and got it secured. Tonight I was working on the fuel lines and placement of the pump and filter.
I did some more turning and made a heater delete plate. My boy and I repainted the front grills. I did one, he did the other. His turned out great too, no runs. Pretty good for an 8 year old shop hand. And I found another low beam T3 headlight so now I have a complete set. I also got the fuel pump, filter and lines all in and secured all the way up to the regulator at the back corner of the blower. Now I just need to finish up the carb lines tomorrow.
Thanks man. I'm having a blast just doing all kinds of things to be a little different. My Boy is 8 and he's been hanging out with me in the shop more and more so I get him to help me too. He painted the passenger side grill the other night. Then I had him hold that delete plate from inside the car while I secured it from the engine compartment. Good thing I had him using the end of a hammer handle. Hit it twice with the screws. We were both laughing about that. obviously I wasn't going to chance zipping a screw into his hand.
thought I'd add this picture to your collection. there was one posted earlier that looks close to this one, I like the no helmet and the smile.....
Gary, that must have been taken while that car was still pretty new. You can see the rear inner wheel well is still white with only a little tire rubber. Thanks, Dil
