This is not really my style. But it is a nice car. I found it while looking for an earlier version of itself. It appeared in R&C in May '94 and I remember it being the first '36 I liked as a hot rod. Prior to that I'd only liked customs.

  3. I think it would be bad-*** as a Westergard-style Taildragger.... I love the old blank and white pics of the EARLY Customs......

And the token Chevy chimes in. My 36 will drop to the ground but will be full modern hot rod under the hood with a 6 sp manual. Kind of a *******.[IMG][IMG]

  9. Ive got no pics for you Pete, but im thinkin its a no brainer, due to the fact that you already own a hot rod.
Build the tail draggin custom thats in your head, throw the Cad in, and use the fake triple carb modern fuel injection. The faux triples would give you reliability, performance and look cool, and the Cad will give it the old feel.
    My two cents.

Here is a Photoshopped 5 window I did some time ago. Hard-Top with Matranga style window frames.

Photoshopped version of the bare metal 5-window that has been posted here in this thread before.

Mines a hot rod....But I wish it was a custom. Its so perfectly setup as a hot rod though I wont touch it. Oh well.
And Rikster.....you are the absolute man. Wow.

  13. Hey Striper, Australia needs more customs. This is the style I'm going for for my old roadster, I have just started the transformation, there is a long way to go yet. If I were you, I would go the same route, there aint many cars of this style around here. Good luck which ever way you go, just dont go down the gold chain highway!

Hot Rod Dude. That is a beautiful car. Do you know what the wheel covers are? Maybe Rik would know. I need some of those.

I'm not a fan of fake. I'm thinking more along the lines of 2x4 on the 390. That should do it.

    I know...but it's turning into a good thread. Don't stop me now.

What about a custom with no skirts?

It's been said, but... You've got a killer Hot Rod, do the the '36 up as a Taildragger with the Cad you've already got. Best of both worlds!

It has to have skirts too, just don't paint it Olive green...

    Those are Lyon aftermarket hubcaps.
They where very popular in the late 1940's early 1950's. They do show up on ebay and swap meets from time to time... Lyon produced many different type of Custom hubcaps over the years.

  22. They're killer either way! Personally I like hot rod.

I prefer 5w's as hot rods, and 3w's as customs. I always said I dont care fore a chopped 5w, but the ones Rikster posted are changing my mind. The roof line on a 3w just lends it self to a more custom look.

    But I'm slightly biased...

See Dan. That's the trouble. I really think I prefer customs and then you post that piece of hot rod **** and I question myself. I'm only human.

I'm more on the hot rod side...
The only thing I know is that the top should not be chopped (just MY opinion!)
That's mine here. It's completely stock. Have the parts but no time yet to:
    -lower the front and back
    -juice brakes
    -slightly smaller and bigger tyres
    -remove the spare wheel
At the end it's your car...good luck!!

I hate to even ask a question having seen the damage done to those who dare to admit they do not know everything. But here it goes.

A custom has to have its nose pointed high? Skirts are just short of manditory for a custom? You need nice paint? Kinda sounds like a custom is a show car with little or no goo? Like the low riders??? whats the difference between a custom and a Bomb? They seem the same except the low rider bomb crew add every factory option possible(and curb feelers!) Also whats the point of the nose high look? All for looks or the owners cant figure out how to drop the front of the car? Are air bags accepted in the custum crowd? I think they have been used since around 58, or is that just too new?

A hot rod goes fast, no skirts, fenders optional, *** up. built for speed.

    Kustom ????

A few posts back a car was sitting flat on the ground and it was commented that it had wrong stance, needs nose up. Why? Is that just to fit into a category?

I never seem to fit into categories.... or take advice on how I should like things.

A car that sits flat on the ground looks - personal opinion - like its broken... it makes no sense to me at all. To me its not about fitting into a category at all, just about the right look. Every car has its own - and most like more than one - perfect stance. This can be either a rake forward, tail dragging or even level. But to me this can never be flat on the ground.
That is the easy way out... and does not work, it looks silly and is P***E!

Here is a nice Custom... with a slight rake forward, and not so extremely low as others.
