Still confused. I always thought the *** on the ground, nose up looked broken. Like they never finished lowering the car. Reminds me of a young me in the 80s when I drove around with the *** of my camaro sky high. Although I was pretty cool back then. When I hear Custom I think of the funky stuff like Barris built in the day, or is that where the "K" comes in. I love all these examples, some more than others...

By the way, I am in the process of lowering my 36 and it seems the easy way out would be to leave the nose up. It is causing me way more work to lay it down flat so not sure why that is considered the easy way to do it.

Oh why o why cant I fit in????

I think lowering the rear is more difficult then the front. The front is easy, 4" drop axle, Monoleaf spring, reversed eyes......

The back however would require me to flatten the crossmember and use reversed eyes as well. My car just has leaf springs removed and reversed eyes along with longer shackles to get it to this point. Any more I would be looking at flattening the crossmember like I said.

Thats a great looking hot rod you have there. My car does not fit in anywhere really, and no its not even a close relative of the rat rod. But its got roots in the hot rod category. Built for speed and handling. I am not much of a showy guy.[IMG]

The point I think Rik is trying to make is in the end it is still a car and should look like it can be used as one.

As he mentioned it's not a matter of what the stance is like in terms of nose up, rear up rake or level it's a matter of a car laying on it's rockers is not a functional car and doesn't look like a functional car. It looks like someone dropped it from 50 feet up and the suspension was destroyed.

I think the easy way out comment is not about the work involved in actually getting the car to lay frame but the work invloved in thinking about the stance of a car and incorperating it into your build. It is easy to make it so when you want to can raise the car up to clear things and lower it down when you want to look cool. It is a lot more difficult to build a static lowered suspension that will look cool and still allow you to get around. And getting around is a lot more difficult with a static lowered suspension.

This is a traditional Hotrod and Custom board and laying frame is a mini truck thing that has been adapted to customs recently therefore it really has nothing in common with what this board is about.

In the end though it is personal preference just as Rik stated his was that laying frame looks broken. Yours may differ.

Oh and I forgot to mention build it as a custom!!

By the way, the rear was simple to lower. The front may need to be z'd to get it where I want which will require all new attachment for the front sheet metal. The back was easy. I fully understand the difficulty of building a static suspension that will also function. That would be tough to do and still enjoy driving the car. I guess that is why I am a hot rod kind of guy, hot rodders use whats available at the time to build your car to go fast. Pretty sure the first guy to shove a flathead V8 in his car got laughed off the road when the bangers were leaving him in the dust but he chose to go a different direction. [IMG]

AMEN, AMEN, AMEN. It's all about the stance. Always, be it a custom OR a hot rod. A BROKENLOW™ car has no stance.

Here is my 5 window, with two different sets of tires. I'm with Dan... I used to hate chopped 5 windows. They have to be done a certain way or they just don't look right. But I am starting to not mind the chopped 5 windows.

    Blackwalls...

    .

Realistically, a custom 5 window is going to be more unique than a hot rodded 5 window. Think of all the 5 window street rods that are out there. Since I've got the hot rod, my cabriolet is going to be a custom, but a pre-war custom. Which is funny because for years I hated fender skirts.

I understand stance is everything but if you look back through this thread there are a ton of customs with the running boards laying on the ground, or the *** is touching the ground. *** touching with nose up is stance? I know its tradition but to be honest they do not look natural and I see no real purpose for this stance other than for looks. Hot rods were dropped and chopped for a reason. Even g***ers were sky high for a reason. Maybe I will have to raise the rear of my car an inch so I can hang out with you guys!

Django, thats a great looking car. I like the black wall tires on it. And the paint!

Anything touching the ground is wrong, IMO. A slight reverse rake still has the stance for that genre. You're right, it was done for looks. But somewhere along the line, it became "cool" to take it too far.

    Thanks!

Of course it is for the look. That is what customs are all about.

Again it is personal preference and if you like the laid out look you shouldn't change it because a bunch of us don't like it but just know it will catch a bit of flak on this board.

Granted it's a 3 window and a '35, but I really love Josh Mill's coupe... From Rikster's site... And there was a '35 in Hop Up that was pretty awesome too. I think it was a 3 window too though.

I always liked this one. Saw it at the first or second Primer Nats in Ventura.

I like the direction this one is heading too.

There is always Jesse's for comparison...

Josh Mills' coupe is probably my favorite right now. He's so dialed in with that **** it's not funny. And I might add he's the salt of the earth. Super nice guy!

Here is the car I am building for my wife and is actually the car Rikster photoshopped...

The car has bags in the back here is before and after Zephyr skirts were put on. I like it with them myself.

Some nice examples appeared while I slept. Thanks guys.

29sportcoupe...surely with that IFS you can put the front wherever you want it.

    Django...thanks for the "comparison".

I think the stance of Josh Mills' 35 is bang on the money.

That’s lookin good ... well done so far.
Tell me … why one would go to all the work to flatten there cross member when they could simply flatten the spring.

I went to check my own picture files to see what I had collected over the years. What should I find but this one. I'd forgotten I even saved a pic of it. And what had I saved it as? "36 5w Perfect"

I think we have a winner. This is the direction I'll be heading. Maybe different wheel covers (although I do have a set of sombreros) and maybe slant the B pillars just a tad to make the 1/4 window a little bigger.

I think I'm on track now. Time for a shed day.

  23. I'd go that way, but hide some nice sized rear tyres under the skirts so it's a fast custom, always been my leaning...

  24. not that it matters as it's your car you're building, but that 35 ticks all the 'boxes', with a timeless appeal to boot.

The whole laying rail deal is a nice gimmick with it's own appeal, but, as per that 35, stance is a underated necessity for that period of time when you've outgrown the fashions.

As for your earlier talk of driveline, I enjoy driving the merc which feels like it's gliding along effortlessly at speed, but I feel it takes it to another level when you can be sitting cosy on the highway and the young punks who pull alongside with a dazzled look on their faces wondering wtf is that old car, only to offer them a nod of the head and stick the boot in, leaving them in your wake struggling to catch you....;):D

    Cheers,

    Drewfus

I was looking for some reference of that car. It's on the cover of a '90s R&C but there was nothing inside about the car. That is a cl***ic hot rod '36.

G'Day Pete, when Hoey went over to the US, he took the trouble to find me a copy of that R&C little pages. I'll scan it and PM it to you. The car was actually tracked down and featured again in R&C not too long ago, if I can find the link I'll fling it at you.

    Cheers mate, Matt
