My son and I have a 1950 caddy, 61 series,2 dr coupe. We are going to build a custom. Chop the top, shave handles and emblems, and lower it as low as possible. I have done all this before except for subframing an old car. I have a 1980 Impala frame section from under the cowl forward that I would like to use. Has anyone out there done this conversion?? If so.. please let me know the steps you took. Thanks Don
I did a '55...does that count...??? Go here to see the complete 5 1/2 year build: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=329070&highlight=the+best+55+caddy+build R-
I haven't, but was asked to look at doing one for a client a couple of years ago. In my measuring, the clip I came up with that would most likely fit the best was G.M. '78-'87 A or G body. In my opinion, the Impala clip is going to be a bit wide for that early car. it would probably be suited for a later '50s Caddilac, though. If memory serves correct, the Impala clip is right at 62" wide and I know the Monte, Malibu, Camino clip to be 58.5". The deal fell through because of the $$s like so many others, but I might get to do it soon after all... We'll see.
my friend, with the help of 2 other friends converted his '49 fastback to Corvette C4 front suspension (on stock rails), Lincoln disc/4 link rearend with bags all around. Turned out sweet!
I used an early Cad Seville frame (about '76 if I remember correctly) for my '48 Cad convert. The sub-frame, which is the same as a Malibu, proved to be too wide. I wound up narrowing the A-arms by about 1" per side to get the fender clearance I needed. A major pain in the ***! A Fatman stub is the way to go, IMHO...
Don here is the '49 Sedanette I did= that we talked about= with that 78-80Caprice /Impala clip...It has 15by 8" steel wheels on it and a dual quad Big block so yes it fits..... also used the Impala rear end.
33DB, there's a '50 Cad that might inspire you pictured under "history", I'm looking for information on it and any help would be greatly appreciated. good luck on your project.
