Sorry, Sparky but I'm not "Selling" anything. If you want to continue to live the lie that is "Loud Pipes Save Lives" go ahead, but your only real defense against ****py drivers is defensive driving. And when the laws p*** that say noting but stock exhaust due to all the *****s with Straight pipes, we'll have guys like you to thank, but then you'll be dead, cuz you won't have your loud pipes to save your life anymore.

Maybe Loudpedal will start to understand, maybe not. :D

  6. No one actually talks about feeling the noise, it is a proven fact that much of the fatigue that comes from noise is from the vibration. Your body is just a big resonator, that's the reason that the Bone Phone worked if you are old enough to remember them.

I drive my 55 around with baffled fenderwell headers and my ears are ringing for hours after I get home. I'm talking 30 minutes in the car.

  8. LP I think the difference between you and the rest of the folks on the road is that you are paying attention. We as rodders and motorcyclists [don't care for the term biker, I am a clubber and I ride a motor cycle] as a rule pay more attention to things like that. The average soccer mom will never notice a bike or a rod loud or not in her blind spot until she feels the bump.

OK so now can I add a question to the OPs question? How on earth did this become a ******* match, I mean I'm gone for a day and its the young crowd against the boomers, or the boomers against the young guys depending on your point of view. You all need to get your ******* un-knotted and get on with life. Truth is that it doesn't matter how surley you fellas get with each other you will never be as well endowed as I am.

To me there isn't a sweeter sound than a well tuned engine with open exhaust. I have drove drag cars, stock cars uncorked even hang at the start line with aa/fuelers launching not to mention many rock concerts and listening to my wife for 39 years and my hearing is still pretty good. The only times I used earplugs was driving an SCCA open car because of the wind. I don't recomend others not to use ear protection but When I check out I hope I am used up, cause I hate to waste good parts.

Well, uh lemme see. Leaving a whole whack of torque and horsepower on the table for the sake of looking "kewl"? Hmmm, sounds pretty "poser" to me...

  24. i used to run a air cooled vw with a pretty good size engine and an open stinger,it had a baffle that you could shuv in the pipe, and had a sheetmetal screw to hold it in, the baffles are 15 bucks each, they have a metal ring,a louverd pipe and fibergl***, the same thing thats in a gl*** pack,

but half the cost and its already cut for you, wouldnt shuving one in each pipe work?im ***uming you have lake headers....its kinda what im planing on doing.

I've run open headers on my roadster for some years now(flathead). I've used earplugs on long runs, the noise level isn't bad at all, but it's a relatively low compression motor. The thing that IS bothering me is the exhaust fumes. My pipes end at about the front of the door, slightly angled down. The air going over the windshield and ****pit creates a vacuum in the ****pit that pulls the exhaust in from any gap around the doors. I run lead additive, so I'm really not wild about breathing that stuff. I have had the 'jitters' after getting home from a long run(it's weird...) Can't go to sleep and just generally feeling bad. I'm currently changing over to headers and pipes that run out the back. I think I've taken enough days off of my lifespan. I certainly believe, however, to each his own....

This is from back in the build days.

A bunch of us drove from Rochester NY to the Not-So Goodguys party outside of Indy a couple of years ago. I had the priveledge of riding in and driving my friend's '34 2dr sedan with a zoomie equipped Desoto hemi in it dumping right behind the front wheels. 1200+ miles of heat, stink and enough racket to wake the dead. To say it was a ton of fun is an understatement.

Earplugs were mandatory equipment and ear muffs over them would have helped even more. Yes the noise, heat and fumes causing fatigue cannot be understated. Get the noise and exhaust heat behind your seat if you can. We arrived tired, hot and smelly but it was one of the best trips in my life and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

What perfect timing! JUST picked up this months Hot Rod Magazine, and what is in there but a dyno test on what I can only describe as a HAMB "house" motor. Weak ***ed 350 with a comp cams thumpr' and a tunnel ram, managed to wheeze its way to 364hp@ 5,400 rpm. And why is this relevant you ask? They also tested it with zoomies! Drooped another ten @ peak power to 354hp, as if this laughable pile of **** could AFFORD to give up 10hp anywhere. They say it lost anywhere from 10-20hp elsewhere in the curve, as well. Yea baby, gotta get me a thumpr and some zoomies! This place cracks me up...

Ya know what cracks me up? The fact that that is old news. That's Hotroding 101 stuff. Everyone who's been around knows zoomies on almost anything that doesn't have a blower causes a power loss, not to mention when you make more HP with mufflers and when you don't. It's the same article run every 2 years or so in Hotrod, just rehashed.
