Projects 59 El Camino.. Build Pics

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by J.Fishbeck, Jan 2, 2010.

  1. That would be fun to build a guitar! Probably get some different sounds out of it. No flappers, just holes!

    Lunch break, update..

swapped the left to the right and vise versa.. then flipped 'em over. now the radiator will lay flat and closer, to the core support. Mounting the radiator and making the radiator bracket, will now be easier on me. Whatever!

Now I have a lot of symmetry & clean up, work to do.. cut the holes in the fan bracket, plus figure out how the mount is going to work. It needs to direct 'all' the air thru the radiator, not around it. Dual purpose

  4. Hahaha.. the fung shui- no gewd, side to side.. UUuuuhhp, DOooooWWWwN, veddy gewd! Aye Danielson!

  5. Still lots to do..

Here's the beginning of radiator bracket/air deflector. Glad I flip flopped the orig radiator provisions. Much bettah!

You twist the lower part on the handle, to change from left to right.

I don't think the 5/8" socket comes off, either.

  8. What a coincidence. The timing on that is pretty crazy! Pops tools are priceless, to me. I smile, when I see the 'ol ones with 'Made In The United States Of America' printed out in its entirety. But I ain't complaining about the abbreviated U.S.A pieces at all.

Pretty cool!Your dad and uncle have some pretty neat tools.I remember when I took my first body shop class at Valley your dad gave me a couple of dolly's to get started.

  10. Delrin may be a better material to use for the radiator saddles than wood.
    Lookin' good dude, carry on!

  11. They have never had a problem buying tools.. unless they were replacing something lost or stolen! He showed me a patience, my little squirrley ass needed. I respect his tools, cos they're what he used to use. My tools are 99% new, cos I just use his.

I knew I should've cleaned the insulators, they're rubber. Excuse my ignorance, but I haven't heard of Delrin.

So I picked up my 32BB Frame.. Stopped by Jim Kitchens (Stan Back) on my way home to let him take a gander at this thing. He'll be a great help, when I can finally get to this project!

  12. I got some more time in today..

I spaced it two paint sticks up, on boff' sides!

    lower mounts, are now mounted..

I didn't want to use any 'angle iron', in the making of any of this..

Looking good Jay. Hopefully your weather will allow you to get it finished, and on the road, this summer. Do you already have a spray booth arranged to paint it or will you have someone else do the paintwork? Amazing how far you've come along..............Mike

  14. I am going to paint it outside, early in the morning, when all the bugs & insects are still asleep. I haven't ever used a spray booth.. this sedan/pick up isn't worthy any-who!

I have a question, Have you measured the clearance between the hood and the rad cap? might be just the angle of the picture but it looks like it sits up really high.

  16. Don't apologize for things that work!

    I run a pair...

    Great buildl!!

  17. Sorry, my mistake. In the picture they look like wood.
Delrin is a plastic that is abrasion resistant, low friction, easily machined, won't wear metal. I've used it to mount aluminum radiators, hood bumpers, motorcycle stuff....

  18. It does sit above the core support.. but you're right, it's the angle that is exaggerating it, too! I'll make it work, if that's what I have to do!

Thanks! The traditionalist frown upon modern advancement, but not me!

I did a search on Delrin.. A friend of mine has used it in his machine shop. I will definitely keep that in the back of my mind. Thanks, Jay

  19. I just came into to check HEMIFARRIS' 59 Elco pictures, of his radiator.. mine looks like its in the game, except the rad cap! I'm gonna have to find someone to TIG it closed for me. Then, I'll use an inline hose/filler necks type deal.(I'll paint it all black, so it doesn't stand out!)

Chased all the threads, I have to figure out some more things, tomorrow! And I should be able to wrap this shit up, there's too much time in this thing.

Keep the hard work up......Keeps me motivated ...cause I drove mine outa the shop today ...woohooooo.now on to he wiring harness and figuring out wheels and tires and a little coloured primer

  22. That is very cool.. I would use paint, with a deadner instead of primer. Primer is porous, an it doesn't withstand the rain & water. Which equals more rust. It's worth the lil bit a money, for the paint!

maybe I mis-spoke ....yes base paint with a little something something in it ....thanks ......

  24. So after quite a bit of trial & error.. I made it work! I stepped over dollars, to save penny's. Never again, unless there just isn't a production made radiator, for what ever I end up working on. That's what I've learned from all this..

    keep up the good work.

  26. Thanks, I'm glad to be done with it.. as soon as my new core support bushings (the rubber insulators) actually show up, I'll start on fitting the whole front end together. Lots to do there, also!

Perfect, if it wasn't for bad luck I wouldn't have any at all.

  30. 12 Gage in the psngr seat of my 57.. Just a different type of gage! This is why I need an El Camino. The plate is for the underside/center of the 59's front bumper! To fill in where the lic tag normally goes. I will use the rest, to shave tri 5 bumper guards.. smoothy style!

So all the these mldgs, really came alive.. once polished by the 220 grit green rouge. Not perfect, but they's real shiny!

I love this, this.. THING, my Dad made! Works great, it was something he made after working at the chrome shop!

    That's a wrap!
