Just wondering what's the safest way to clean some Wide Witewall Biasply tires. I've heard stories about certain methods turning the whitewalls yellow.
Let me know what you use.

    Thanks,
    Mike

i use dawn and a co**** sponge. works like a charm. BlechWhite works, but will eventually damage the rubber

yellowing seems to be thing of the past as Coker now guarantees their tires to never yellow.

I've used Bleechwhite and never had a yellowing issue, works well.

I use Simple green and a scrub brush for normal cleaning. For really tough stuff, I'll use Westley's and a scrub brush, then hit 'em with the Simple Green to be sure I'm rid of the Westley's.

Westley's is nasty stuff, it will eat paint and aluminum if it is not rinsed away quickly and completely.

Whitewalls turn yellow from the transferance of the chemicals in the blackwall part of the tire seaping through the back side of the whitewall and staining it from the inside out. Once it has turned yellow....there is no going back. From my experience, bleach and Dawn power disolver oven cleaner turn whitewalls white temporarily for 3-5 days, then the browning returns.

Bleach is not safe to use on any whitewall tire. Yes it works, however, the harsh chemicals rob the natural rubber of its oils, thus causing premature decomposition (cracking and dry rotting).

Here at Diamondback we recommend only Eagle F-1, 409 degreaser, mop and glo floor wax or simple green, each in conjuction with a scotchbrite scuff pad (green).

Lastly, grinding whitewalls into radial tires was a popular practice, however, it is detrimental to the structural integrity of the tire. This makes a tire unsafe to use. You may be "ok" for a while, but when it goes, it will always be a the worst time, and you DO run the risk of damaging your car, or even worse, end up in a collision. Grinding is NOT suggested for any street use tire!

I hope this helps--- Ron, GM Diamondback Cl***ics

    Ron,

You guys need a payment plan/credit system for your tires. I desperately want a set of Radial Widewhites but cant come up with the lump sum for them all. Something else always seems to break just when I'm saving up enough $.

no doubt, ron, you need a 1/2 down, and rest on a credit card payment plan for those! i wanta set of the bias ply look alikes SO SO SO bad, do you guys garaanty against yellowing as well?

  10. I've always found that a cheap spray on degreaser (pressure pack can) followed by rinsing then wash with soapy water (whatever you use for the rest of the car) works really well and lasts. Unless of course you like playing in mud :)

Why don't you just get an advance on a credit card?

Oh, and Eagle One's A2Z (or A-Z) tire and wheel cleaner seams to work real well on whitewalls. I used to use SOS and BleechWhite, but after seeing the excess "white" water, I realized it was taking down the whitewall material when cleaning. No good.

Hello guys, Patrick here at Coker Tire. Meguiar's has a new Next Generation tire cleaner out that works really well, and we've got a Wide White Cleaner and Dressing combo that's good too. We had ours made specifically for whitewall tires, but it works on redlines, whitewalls, raised white letters, just about anything you can throw at it.

How about some tips for turning your bright whites yellow!!!

The whitewalls I've bought from Coker have always stayed nice and white, And I've always wished they'd yellow. I was going to try and stain them with something...maybe tea? Or my favorite thing....Coffee?

  14. I have some really old bias ply whitewalls that my friend bought me for $30 at a swapmeet. They were nasty, yellow, and in some cases dark yellow or brown. I didn't think I would be able to clean them up and was prepared to sand them down and paint them if I had to. I bought some Wesley's bleach white and a sidewall brush from Wal-Mart and that is all it took. They are bright white now. That stuff is no joke. It truley works wonders.

    That's impressive.
Ask a tire question and the guys from Coker and Diamondback both chime in with replies.
