So why hasn't this "sport" taken off?

Maybe this does exist on a smaller scale, but i was thinking, after reading about cams and experimentation, why hasn't something like "dyno racing" or "dyno challenges" caught on?

In other words people will instead of actually racing cars, just build up engines and then on sunday or whenever meet at a facility(could also be racetrack) with dynometer and put the engines on the dyno---highest numbers win.

There would be parameter stipulations for each season/or month/or week whatever such as cubic inch limit, head design limits, carburation limit, naturally aspirated or not etc. etc. etc.

i think this would be much cheaper(initially at least), easier(as compared to building up a whole car), very educational and just as fun as real racing for a lot of people.

These could even take place at a race track in addition to actual racing. Std entry fees would apply.

Note that i don't advocate this as a substitute for real racing-- nothing beats that. But i think this would be a good alternative.

Hmmmm....................Howza bout the difficulties, of having a Dyno setup, to fit my 440 Mopar stting in the shop, and to fit this other guys blown Cadillac flathead tank engine, qnd the other guy's Hudson Hornet 6, and your Buick straight eight, not to mention accomodating all the mounts and plumbing, for said engines, and the clean up afterward, from swapping engines, or scattering one in somebody's dyno cell..........................Just for starters.
Plus, there would be no tire smoke......................

"Dyno Drags" are the most popular on chassis dynos from what I've seen...

Because watching an engine rev up is boring compared to watching it propel a car and driver down a track.

Because all the horsepower in the world is meaningless unless you can put it on the ground.

In my opinion nothing beats your own butt on the line, so to speak. Too sanitary IMHO.

You would have to build your own Dyno cart for your engine with the correct spec from the facility. We do this at my shop. Each motor has its own cart ready to go.Wheel it in lock it down and do all your quick connects..vroom vroom.

And I would think it is way more of an engine builder thing than an owner/competitor thing. You build a competitive engine, take it to the contest, and how well you do at the contest says how well your shop does selling race engines the next season.

Even most of the guys here would like to have a dyno readout on their Flathead, nailhead or Early Cad V8 I doubt that many of us want to risk an engine that we just put serious change in on a dyno.

or better yet they could make an attachment so you just hook your motor up to your i-phone and can compete with people all over the world...

man, i hope this never happens but this post did make me realize i'm wasting daylight, back to the garage...

Who cares. That's probably why it hasn't caught on. I'd rather drive at whatever speed, than just watch my engine go round and round.

no, it will be more like roller derby. you push your motor around the track on a dyno with wheels, and you are wearing roller skates... the one who knocks out the most other motors from the ring wins

  22. That would be like Arabic porn where the girl stays dressed!?!?! WTF?

  23. Thank-you.... ties right in with a post about a week ago calling this hobby thing a sport. It isn't. It's a hobby! You wanna be in a sport, go play week-end flag football.

Now before anyone jumps on my a$$, driving 500 miles at 200+ miles an hour, or strapping yourself into a 6 second 1/4 mile machine.... yeah, I'd consider that a sport.

Oh, a 2000 mile race across a desert, I think that would qualify the driver as an athlete also.

Sitting around drinking beer and eating cheese sticks watching a dyno, that ain't a sport.... it's a hobby.

Frick I'm getting old and cranky.

sorry, I still think racing is racing and not a sport.. and I flung 400lb. motorcycles around for years and didn't consider it a sport.

You should check out Benefiber, it's amazing, it's like there's an extra one in there every day. :D

  28. OK, you're getting old and cranky too.:D

I'm just thinking you actually have to have some physical competencies to drive 500 miles in traffic at 200+......... and I'm not even a Nascar fan!

The desert thing would qualify also...... I'll give you the 6 second ride may not be.

Speaking of taking a poo, I'd say that one took a dump big-time...

Its a really strange world when dyno time becomes an end in itself.
