I spotted a late 30's (Chevy I'm pretty certain) coupe pick-up yesterday. I'd never even heard of one before and it required a Google search to figure out what I'd seen. I'd like to do a model of one at some point. Does anyone have any info on what companies offered one and what years they were made? I'll continue my online search in any case. Anyone building one?
Most were homemade because of necessity during the war years. Gas was rationed and a pickup was allowed more rations because it was a work vehicle. Most people couldn't afford to buy new so they made the best of what they had. I have a 29 coupe that was somewhat crudely made into a pickup at one time.
Try searching the Aussie ute thread. Australia built several diffrent brands of factory coupe utes. Its diffrent to hacking the back off a coupe, which may be what your thinking.

we had the "real thing" over here but i do believe you're talking about the homemade version. i even found a model one
I figured he meant home made, (but wasnt 100% sure) and ive seen early thirtys ones, but the 41 yourve posted is sure odd. Im not sure wether to like it, cause its different, or spit up in my mouth.
Not all were home made. I have seen Chevy literature 1935-38 that offered a truck bed that fit into a coupe trunk. It was marketed to the farmer. He could have a car to go to church and a truck to go to market. If Chevy did it at least some of the other brands must have offered it.
It's okay to do both. At least it was done tastefully, if that's possible. I like the use of the pickup bedsides.

Here are a couple of Pix of a friend on mine who just finished a 1937 Chevrolet Coupeup !! This was a Factory accessory kit available from Chevy. This vehicle has been a Coupeup all of it's life. It resides in Chapel Hill N.C.
they were a Factory installed option that came with the trunk lid so that the owner could remove the truck bed and go back to a standard trunk if desired.
lol just read that link that JANTRIX posted and it said that australian car makers were making utes well into the 50's ........... uum they still make 'em now. so i guess that well well into the 50's
