I have a new side cover for the 235 inline. Do I need sealer on the gasket also? Black rubber, if it matters.

Valve cover gasket is Cork, I usually glue the gasket to the cover and no sealer only some light grease on the bottom (V8). Same here?

Yes, glue it to the cover.

  3. If you tighten the bolts too tight you can split the cork gasket. Especially in the corners and it will leak. I use the black gasket maker and it seals them up. You don't really need any on the top. They leak out of the bottom.

I like Indian Head gasket sealer. I use it on both sides of the gasket. Be careful with the side cover if its like stock, they'll bend up. Don't go too tight on the bolts. A better (but more expensive) option are the various aftermarket finned side covers. They're much thicker and more rigid.

Ok, I might not follow completely sorry.
I glued the gasket to the cover.
But, do I glue it to the engine side also?...I mean the lifters are flat even with the bottom edge...
Just double and triple checking? Am I going to need to get in there?

My first 235...as you can see.

I used Indian Head on both sides of the gasket for the stock side cover. It was leaking and that helped some.

Permatex Hi-tack works pretty good. Another sealer is Gaskacinch. Both stay pliable.
