Man thats too bad about your car, gotta be rough on you right now. Thankfully you had the presence of mind to get unbuckled and get out and away from the fire.

Good thing you got out of the car, and weren't hurt. Did you figure out how the wheel came off? Was it really the left rear that came off? Looks like the right rear is on the car in the pics. I can understand the mix-up being under the trama of loosing your ride! That being on fire is scarry stuff!

  4. Glad to hear you made it out ok. I WILL buy a fire bottle for mine after reading this. Could this have been avoided by not running the POLY tank guys? Just an honest question.

X2 on the fire extinguisher. Hate to see the plymouth lost.

  17. Sorry for your loss. With a hole in the poly gas tank allowing the entire contents to feed the flames, a small fire extinquisher may not have helped much, but it still should be mandatory equipment before taking a car out for a ride. I've not been a poly tank fan since I had a leak in one at Goodguy's Columbus many years ago. Thankfully in my case, no one was smoking nearby when it started leaking. Fire is a nasty thing!

EVEN A SMALL FIRE EXTINGUISHER WOULD HAD HELPED THE ONLY OBJECTS THAT BURN AND MAKE THERE OWN OXYGEN TO MAKE IT ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO EXTINGUISH IS RUBBER (TIRE) AND MAGNESIUM IF MY MEMORY SERVES ME CORRECT. THE FIRE EXTINGUISHER ABSORBS THE OXYGEN SO THAT THE FIRE DOES NOT HAVE LIFE TO BURN. SO EVEN A SMALL ONE AS LONG AS YOU DO NOT HOLD THE NOZZLE DOWN IN ONE SHOT BUT RATHER IN SMALL SPRAYS WOULD HAD HELPED OR EVEN SHUT THE OXYGEN OFF TO KILL THE FIRE. Knuck From Indiana.

That was a very nice looking car; I've always liked them since a neighbor kid had one in high school. I don't know much about this, so I'll ask if anyone knows : Would the kind of fire extinguisher that we usually carry in our cars, (which aren't very big) have been able to take care of a fire like that shown in the second picture? I'd like to hear from anyone who has had any experience with this.

Like everyone else, I'm sorry for your loss, and I'm glad you're OK. Insurance may make you monetarily whole, but some cars are irreplaceable.

Man that is so sad. But as others have said ,it can be replaced. I showed my wife the pictures in order . I thought she was going to cry when she saw the chared remains. I carry a fire extinguisher...but doubt if it woulkd have done to help in this case. I have a poly tank in my coupe. I'm going out to check my scrub line .

Damn, I thought I was having a bad day with all the poor weather, but your experience today blows me away.
I don't think I could watch any of my cars burn.
Glad you are OK and I hope the insurance company treats you fairly.

Do you know why the wheel come off?? Lug nuts? fractured wheel? broken axel?

Was there something you could have done to prevent it i.e. lessons learned?

  28. BEEN THERE!
Glad you're OK. I know your bummed about that car!
About eight years back, I lit up my '36 Ford one evening! Drove to town to get my son from Boy Scouts - smelled a gas leak. "Better head home quick", I thought and as we left the parking lot, BOOM! Sounded like the first shot of duck season! Flames shot out the hood louvers. When I got it open, the fire was after wiring, rubber hoses and one of those plastic fuel filters! No rags, no water, no nothin to put it out. As the flames and smoke belched skyward, someone finally got an extinguisher from a store across the street. By then the engine, wiring, paint on the hood and cowling were fried. Melted solder from the radiator! Got the fire out and finally drug the car home. Lucky for me I had insurance that paid off.

Yes, I felt the fool! But we learned the lesson that night. ALWAYS CARRY A YOU KNOW WHAT!

Now, I have one attached to the floor board in the roadster. Maybe get another one just in case...

  29. As a fire investigator, you made my work easier.....
Now you have a new project.
strip it, blast it and start all over, too nice of a car to s****.
Oh, and check the torque on your lug nuts before your next trip.......
