Building a 55 Chevy street-able g***er. It's getting the doors gutted with lexan for weight. I would like the windows to open still for the street part of it, but no "Two Lane Blacktop" sliders and no window cranks. Any ideas? Maybe slide down with a spring loaded pin to hold it at different heights?

let the "gl***" slide up and down on the runners, attatch a piece of webbing (such as an old seat belt) to the bottom of the gl***, have the webbing over the inner side of the door window apparture, either secure with a hook, a pit pin or similar, or adapt part of an old seat belt buckle to hold the webbing. this method works and was fairly common on club rally cars in the 1970s as a weight saver, lexan being much lighter than gl*** may not want to drop as easily but lube the channels with silicone spray to make things easier.

I've had a quick look for pictures on the net, but many cars from the early years of motoring as well as stage coaches and railway carriages used a very similar system with a leather strap to raise and lower the window such as this shot from an early train carriage.

the window drops into the door and is pulled up by the strap and secured on a peg, simple really.

two lane was a double slider, front or back half sliding for ease of filming...i made mine fixed at the front half and a smaller rear half that slides forward. that way you could still have vent windows, if that was your issue with sliders...

i have seen one done with seat belt material with metal grommets holes( multiple) and a hook/pin at the middle of the door( making it adjustable)

I did one of my Pro Rally cars by getting Lexan that was a snug fit in the window channel fuzzies. It would stay where ever you raised or lowered it by friction alone. Made a simple 90 degree "Handle" near the top to raise and lower.

  8. Thw T-Bolts used a piece of 1/8 cable that pulled over the top of the window opening. Cheap and reliable.

Before you get started you might want to think about:
Polycarbonate(Lexan) scratches a lot easier than acrylic(Plexigl***). Acrylic is harder to scratch than than Lexan, but iut cracks a lot easier. Either can be bought with a scratch resistant coating that helps a lot. Scratch resistant sheets can't be bent, but there are places that can coat regular material after the part is bent.

Also, many cl*** cleaners contain ammonia. Cleaning the plastic with will gradually cloud the surface.

The '68 Hemi Dart had a strap(seatbelt material) that raised/lowered the window....

Pic is of window in the "lowered" position. There is a spot towards the bottom of the Door to snap the belt when in the raised position.
