I have a solid-state, "Hall Effect" points eliminator kit that I just installed on a Chevy V8. It has 1 red and 1 black wire. The company's website says to route the red wire to ign power, and the black to coil neg. I wired it differently, and it works. the way the company says to wire it leaves no where for the voltage to go when triggered? If the system works, will it fry is it's set-up "wrong"?

If you run the power to a constant power source, yes, you'll burn up the module. Needs to be on switched power.

Do you have any idea of how a coil works?

If it is a PerTronix ignitor - you have wired it wrong and will probably fry it.
    Red Wire to coil +
    Black Wire to coil -
12v Ignition source to coil +

That is all. Unless you have a tach, tach signal to coil -

I have Pertronix in both my hot rods and think they work great. Lots of miles and no problems.
