I have a 223 Ford in my 1960 F100. The lifters sound like they are coming through the side cover. Is this normal? Is there a way to make this engine less noisy?

  2. I thought they had solid lifters in the 216/223s?

I am not sure on the solid lifters but I have heard that as well. If that is the case how can you make the noise go away or be less? Maybe it is the valves making the noise. I haven't tried to set the valves to .019 yet.

Solid lifters and, at this point, probably worn rocker arms.

Is the top end getting oil? Everything gets real loose and noisy if it isn't. You will hear it coming from 1/2 a mile away. Years ago I had two that I installed external oil lines to oil the rocker arm shaft.

Mine was a little noisy, sounded like a tractor motor. It seemed to be running OK.

  7. Adjust your valves, then let us know how it sounds.
