My buddy and I carpool to work and everyday I see this around the corner from his house. He says it has been sitting like this untouched for about 10 years. I should go knock and get the scoop on it. I think it is bad ***...
I've knocked on a lot of doors asking about cars. I just ask them if they are interested in selling. You'll know real fast if it can be purchased or not.
If it has been sitting there for ten years it'll probably be there for another ten. It'll be an old guy who will say he's gonna fix it up someday. Good luck to you.
ALWAYS worth a shot! I've knocked on countless doors, more often than not, walking away empty handed. But the few that I have been able to buy make it very much worth while. The coupe I have right now was a knock on the door score as a matter of fact. And a sweet deal at that. You never know. Do it!
Of course you can ask, why not ! They aren't going to hit you or something .. More than likely they will tell you to get off their property and its not for sale and they are going to FIX it up some day, But why not ask anyway ,its good for a laugh or two..... And they MIGHT just say yes.....
Id have been asking ten years ago, and at least once a year after that. One day you'll drive by and it will be gone.
I've had some luck knocking on the door and stating I've been driving by for years and see no-one is working on restoring the car. Tell them your very interested in buying one like yours and want to do a total restoration. Hand them a paper with all your contact information on it and ask them to please consider selling it. Thank them for their time and walk away with a smile. Don't ask for an answer. Give whoever the time to think about it. If they are or are not ready to sell you'll know pretty quick. If the person answering the door owns the car be polite, (it's their baby ya know) and let them know your really interested in buying one to restore. Hand them the note with your info and say please consider selling me you car and walk away apologizing for bothering them. Either way, more often than not your going to get a call. I know, it works. No pressure for them to make a decision. You left. But they can and usually will call to see what you'll offer.
Can't hurt to ask. I used to have three '69 Firebirds on the side of my house, all covered up. One convertible, two decent coupes. I'd have two or three people a month knock and ask if they were for sale. After about ten or fifteen years a guy came by, caught me in the right mood. I sold him all three, cheap. That narrowed my cars down to Hudson only.
Just last weekend, a turbo Firebird that has been setting there for at least 15 years left. Just never got around to asking.
Kerry, I totally understand your asking the question. I once asked someone, same situation like you. I was literally 3 times the size of this little guy, and asked very politely. He got right in my, well not my face but right around my belly****on, and said real threatening like, " you see a F$%^&N for sale sign anywhere ? " I was speachless to say the least.
That's ****ed up, dude. To the original poster, it never hurts to ask... but it always helps to be prepared to show them the color of your money and not just blow smoke up their ***.
Cripes MorMetal, you must work in a HR Dept.... or give kinder and gentler lectures to the rough edge folks......... like those of us in the seafood industry. Very good advise however, and I will certainly add your "inquiry method" to my quiver.
I agree with Gigantor. As much ******** and h***le people get from the fuzz over having our cars and stuff sitting, that's just a great way to also make sure the car is gone where you won't know where it is and you might just lose the opportunity to buy it.
No, and HELL NO!!!!, and dont come back. EVER., and " dont make me climb up this ladder and kick your *** ".
Go for it, all they can do is say no, or it just might be your lucky day and tell you yes it is for sale, then scare the hell out of you with the price.
