Someone out something in my gas tank...Anyone know what it is?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by KadieKay, May 3, 2011.

  1. Someone PLEASE tell me how putting Diesel in your tank will kill your engine. When I was a kid, my buddy had the brilliant idea to go and siphon "gas" from the school busses parked at the yard near my house for his 53 Plymouth. All that happened was a lot of smoke, then barely running, then not running at all. He drained the tank, refilled it with actual gasoline and poured a little down the carb to get it running. It fired, smoked for a minute until the bowl emptied and it ran as well as it ever did. Didn't even hurt the plugs. No spun bearings, no mystery residue, no drama, just a lesson learned, that being, "Only steal gasoline for your car, not diesel" ;)

  2. Most you guys are just fucking guessing. Some of it bordering on comedy:p

  3. Ditto. Your story pretty much matches EVERY story I've heard when deisel is mistakenly put in a gas engine;). I still don't know of one damn thing that can spin a bearing from the gas tank. How do you say..........coincidence?

  4. old car fuel fillers don't have that restrictor plate and one could easily accept a diesel nozzle.

  5. We Valley Boys have a lock on common sense which, has been pointed out, isn't all that common anymore. The comedy is more obnoxious than amusing. Too many people who have no idea how an internal combustion engine functions. All of these mystery fluids making it from the tank to the crankcase. Maybe with a two stroke.

Mythbusters proved it.So why not dump some sugar in your fuel tank and see what happens if you base your beliefs on reality Tv.Don"t believe everything you see on Tv.Pour a 2 lb bag in there and see what happens.

Heres my guess,Fuel tank sealer breaking down and spun bearing was there for awhile.Flush tank and get the crank cut and install new bearings,

I'm sorry, did you just refer to MYTHBUSTERS and SNOPES as emperical scientific proof? Mythbusters are funny, but the couldn't science their way out of a wet paper bag.

Go and try your jar of sugar and petrol trick with an ethanol rich fuel and see what you get. And then with an ethanol rich fuel that has absorbed some water.

Excuse me, I guess I just thought we were on a forum where the suggested age of vehicles discussed should be early 60's and before.

And I highly suspect that the majority of them still have the original gas tanks intact and in use.

  14. What about the theory that someone put a pine lime Vodka jello shot in the tank? It would explain the yellow green colour and the fact it burns, what it doesnt explain is why,...or the spun bearing of course?

You put the lime in the coconut and shake it all around... see? It was all just a big misunderstanding.

(Okay so someone put something in my gas tank. Any and all replies would be appreciated.)

(Does anyone know possibly what it could be or ever heard of this happening.)

Hence the guessing.....At least were trying to help instead of blurting out bullshit complaints.

Several years ago a squirrel got in my gas tank (somehow?) , it blew the hell out of my engine, and left a greasy yellow residue in my tank.

So, It could be a squirrel that spun the bearing, but I am just guessing.

that was my guess to . one time I filled up with gas in my 81 toyota pick up (this happened in 1981 when the truck was new) the truck barely made it home. It turns out at the fuel station the gas truck filled up the ground holding tanks filled the gas holding tank with diesel so instead of reg fuel comming out of the pump diesel was. the gas station paid to have my fuel tank drained and checked over. it didnt ruin my truck but that doesnt mean it could not have ruined yours.

could just be bad gas from the pump. pumped a whole tank in modern daily driver that was a bad mix of ethanol, way to much. car stopped running and gas station paid to empty and refill. They actually said it happens more than you think. we pulled some out and it would separate in a jar. I dont think it has any thing to do with the bottom end.

sounds to me if its in the tank its not just a simple engine breakdown but a sabotage to the fuel tank? it wont go backward up the line.

  21. The water will Certainly settle to the bottom - every time. Diesel will be in the middle and Gasoline will be on top. I worked at a dealership that had their own filling pumps. To test the tank for water, I would paint a grey paste to the Bottom of the measuring stick - if the paste turned red, there was water in the holding tanks. FYI

    lol....seriously.....wtf are you guys doing?

The OP hasnt been back since the 3rd, and who knows if it was even an on topic vehicle.

  23. My guess is that it will clog the fuel filter. If any granuals got past the filter, they could hang the needle and seat open allowing gasoline past the rings into the crankcase -spun bearing.
