I should have said that I'm looking to get a magnesium Halibrand wheel repaired by someone who can weld magnesium.
You're probably going to need an aircraft certified welder to weld mag. Not every welding shop can do it. You might call Eric Vaughn, 626 358 6413. Eric knows everything there is to know about mag/aluminum wheels.
Yep, definately try Eric. The scary part about welding Mag is that right about the point when you strike an arc is about the same point where the wheel wants to light off.
no **** about lighting off! as a kid light off old mower and that ****ing thing slowly melted into the street and boy was i in deep ****!
That material is one of the reasons why the TIG process came into being and here's what I think is a pretty good vid about welding it. It also shows other metals being welded... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weqTWwaaL0g&feature=player_embedded#at=20
B*** in Texas welded up a set he had. He probably still has the rod and settings for his TIG. Shipping migh be a bit much, but it's worth giving him a shout.
Corrosion is a big problem with mag. Mag castings, especially older ones, can't always be welded well enough to be safe. ***uming the metal isn't corroded, whether it can be adequately welded depends on the damage and how weldable you particular part is.
My buddy is an excellent TIG welder and I brought him the correct magnesium rod and some damaged wheels a while back. He said it was as easy as welding aluminum. You do have to thoroughly clean the area and heat it up before welding. I think you would have to really try hard to start the wheel on fire.
