anyone ever need a little more cooling and install a small auxillary radiator, kinda like a heater core but a little larger? maybe a small engine radiator with it's own fan? think a fellow mite shave 10 or 15 degrees off the temp?

yes my blower motor has two extra small ones, besides the heat dissapation, it adds about another gallon of water to the system, drops avg temps 10 degrees

It would work, but i'd only do it if the rest of the system was operating properly and set up right (with a shroud) and there simply was no room for a bigger radiator, or there was some other reason making fan/shroud fitment problematic.

So yes it'll work, but why would you add complexity, weight and ugliness instead of a properly sized/designed cooling system?

for a bux-down daily driver- go for it.

    Rick.

my street car cant get a bigger radiator, you cant see them, they are mounted below the engine, one on each side of the oil pan, then return water to the top of the radiator., were talking about 10 lbs? On alot of these old cars with small cooling systems, you really need more volume of water.

he didn't mention if his car is an unrestored 1961 Krustbucket or if it was a MBRA winning traditional hoodless roadster- your blower car matches a few of the reasons i'd do it, and i may do it myself if the rad in my falcon proves too small-it's dang near rubbing the hood as it is,lol.

it's a viable solution if the obvious has already been addressed.

i have a 40 ford on an s10 chassis with a 454 bbc. i'm running a 65 mustang radiator, thats all i could squeeze into it. it does suprisingly well, but was looking for just a little more margin, maybe 10 to 15 degrees. i saw a small engine radiator that measured 8" x 14" with its own fan for 90 bucks shipped to me. it would fit in the nose perfect, but just didn't know how much good it would do. i changed the dist advance to full manifold vacuum as i've read and that dropped the idle temp about 10 degrees. it's doing fine for a bbc, but just looking for a little more cooling. this ain't no big buck rig, just a driver.........

  8. The heater core thing has been done more than once even by fellas on here. it works if you have just a little too much engine for that little teeny radiator in your old roadster ot something.

Look into your fan and shroud situation. Cheapo flex fan, or OEM style decent fan with clutch? Air leaking past shroud? Radiator 2 or 3 row core?
Do a HAMB search. We need more info.

I would also bet that small fan on that extra radiator will block even more airflow, negating any benefits.

I have a 472 under the hood of my '36. The grill shell is sectioned, the biggest radiator I can fit is the '65 Mustang style. I have an aluminum, 2 core 'Stang style up front, AND a Neon radiator mounted in the frame kick over the rear end with it's own fans. The car was undriveable untill I added the 2nd radiator.

The Neon aluminum radiator, it's two fans AND the aluminum one up front don't wiegh as much as the first copper/brass Mustang one I had in it originally, so I don't see "...added weight and complexity..." as a real issue.

the small 8 x 14 radiator will mount low in the grill and not block the main radiator. i will be able to tell just how much this helps, if any, and i will let ya'll know just in case someone may be interested in this wild cat venture........thanks for the input fellows.........

Griffin makes small drag race radiators that have only inlet and outlets of full size, and no filler necks, so they can be mounted anywhere and at any angle. They come in all sizes and are around $250. They add a lot of cooling capacity and can easily lower your engine temps the 10-15 degrees you want.
