No that's the former Gil Ayala car that is sitting behind Sam's Merc in the first picture of his car at the show.[/QUOTE]

Your right ...I think the name threw me.Possibly entry #411?

Judging by the description I think this must be the car in the middle.

Thanks for the larger scan Ron... it already helped me identify one car I have a photo of. And about the photo of the three cars in a row....

K13 is right.. that is Gil Ayala's 1940 Mercury coupe.

    It might be this one...
I have no additional info on this car.. never seen it in any other photos

I think this is a car that Jim McNiel talked to me about at the GNRS. He told me that Dirty Doug Kinney owned this 1941 Ford with 1949 Merc front end that the Ayala's built... But Jim also told me that Doug most likely had destroyed it like he did with most of his cars... I have no photos of it.

Makes me wonder about the Jesse Lopez 1941 Ford shown in Ron's latest scans.
The car is not listed as Jesse Lopez. The only description that sounds a bit like it could be #412?

Perhaps it did not go to the show.. I only remember seeing photos of Jesse's 41 at the 1950 show.

is that Spencer Murray's 1949 chevy behind Tommy's Phaeton?

  18. If there is any confusion of Gils old car just read where it says it went 129mph.Aint NO OTHER customs that fit that description ran like that during this time.Chopped 40 merc, cad rear quarters, full fadeaway going 129 mph,no queston who's car that was.

    Yes

Photo taken at the same 1952 show... other side. You can see the back end of Tommy's 36 behind the Chevy.

There is one other photo of Sam's Merc taken at this 1951 Roadster show. It is the dead on side view with the trophies on the hood. Its posted in this thread. But it does not show any other cars...

Man how this thread has taken some great turns. To everyone that has contributed I applaud your efforts. I know if my dog ever comes up missing he was wearing Goodyear Supercushions and Sombreros....Rikster will find him then. Its too bad R&C Ron wasnt a member along time ago, what valuable info he has brought to the table. Always admired your Chevy at events like Pleasanton where it stood out for all the right reasons. And Tommy the Greeks Phaeton...damn I need a 35/36 Ford.

Awesome thread. I love the late 40s and early 50s era of the custom car.

  27. "You would think there where moore pics if this was the first time a custom 49 merc was attending?Quote/Hotrod Kenny/ Yes I thought the same thing,I figured there would be more photos and crowds nonstop around this car.The other picture is the one I asked Rik to scan for me and its from the the Don Montgumery book, its also during a different time of the show because the trophies are on the hood.

Thanks for giving me some credit along with the other guys who have been researching the core of this era for years..I appreciate that.Rik's knowledge gives me motivation to learn as much as I can. Thanks to a couple of other guys who have also thanked us,its nice to see more people getting interested in this early era.Rik thanks again for this thread.

49SUPER6....Thanks for the compliments. I have always loved sharing this stuff with my friends, and I had lurked on here for about two years. After some gentle nudging from RIKSTER at Pomona and some computer lessons from good friend HotRodHon I took the plunge and have been loving every minute of it! With so many knowledgable and passionate Gearheads on here, I am just happy to contribute.

    Rik,

You are correct that this is Richard Carter's Ford in the 'I' picture.

This is from Custom Cars, Trend Book No.101 Pg 91.

The picture was taken in the same place as the one in the display and provides some interesting info about the car.

I'm currently scanning this book as it is crammed with pictures and info from 1951 when it was published.
