So, a few months ago I busted the u joint in in 1951 Chevy Styleline deluxe. In doing so it "expolded" the coupling that held my drive shaft to the Transmission (and housed the u joint). long story short I had to get a new ****** and successfully got it in the car (which is a feat if you knew what my day job was)....but how the hell do I get it connected to the Drive Shaft?

    Help.

Well, if you are still using the torque tube setup, you probably need the pieces at the front of the driveshaft. The "ball" housing slides onto the driveshaft housing (torque tube) and the retainer that holds it to the transmission case is just as easily replaced. With a new U-joint ***embly, I don't see the problem.........or did I miss something in your post?

There should be a hole in the center of the ujoint where you can get a socket into. Then you just bolt the whole the whole thing the the output shaft on the trans. If you need pics ill snap a few of mine tomorrow.

Thanks. I thought it would be easy too. But it seems that my "ball" isnt budging! I see that there is a retaining ring (I got that loose) but now.....nothing. I tried everything I could think of to get that SOB to budge....nothing.

Oh... you need to loosen the collar on the back of the ball. Theres a cork seal on the inside of it that. Then you should be able to slide the whole ball, retaining ring and collar back on the torquetube.

This might be a dumb question but... is the car in the air?

  8. Remove what holds the axle housing to the rear springs to allow the torque tube to be moved to the rear with the axle ***embly. Jackstands or lift under the frame, not the rear axle.
Look around to what is holding something together or apart before you "bang" or beat **** to death. Don't be known as a "hammer mechanic" that has beat more **** to death than has repaired.
My favorite hammer has a name, Moneymaker. It's a well worn 3 pound crosspeen hammer on its 7th wooden handle. It is used wisely and can be used delicately.
