Hi Guys, I have a question and was hoping someone here has experience with this. I'm building a small block chevy that is a GM Crate Motor so it has the provision for the dipstick on either side. I ordered a one piece oil pan gasket that also has the dipstick on either side. But the new oil pan I ordered has the dipstick on the driver side only. I checked on Summit's website and I don't see any oil pans that have the dipstick on both sides. So will this setup work? I'm concerned about it sealing on the p***enger side dipstick area, but it looks like it will seal it's just a thin part on that one side. Before I keep searching for a different pan I was wondering if anyone has run across this. Thanks for your input .
Lay the gasket on the block surface (pan mounting) and see if you notice any gap(s) that may leak. "provision" for the dipstick?? Is there a hole where the tube will fit? is it on both sides? On your shortblock, are either of the holes plugged? When you lay the pan on the block, can you see into the pan? if so...yes...it will leak. Sorry I can't be more specific, but the last crate motor I bought was a 365/375hp 327 shortblock at the Chevrolet dealer in Kennewick...or was it Pasco?....dunno Anyway - if all else fails - call Summit's tech number...those guys know 'stuff'. dj
There is a hole on both sides of the gasket for the dipsticks, but when I lay the pan on it it does completely seal, it just doesn't really look right. The pan is sealing only on a thin part of the seal.
Crate engines usually come with a couple of drive in plugs. You pick which side you want to put the dipstick on and plug the other hole. Larry T
Larry, That's true, and i have the plug to put in the side I dont want, but that only works if my oil pan curves out around that dipstick hole. Since my pan is straight across i'm byp***ing that hole, if that makes any sense at all.
