Just wondering what the consensus would be.Im taking it apart tomorrow and checking the bearings ,After that its probably a motor or new aircompressor....I hope its just bearings,
If it is a belt driven compressor motors aren't all that expensive. If it is one of the smaller direct drive ones those usually have special modificatons to the shaft to work with what they go in. See what is wrong with it and go from there.
What did the motor do, did it just quit working or did it let the smoke out? Before you break the motor down make sure you actually have a bearing problem...
Had mine repaired for $100 and it had a broken piston. Definitely cheaper than replacing, and I'm ***uming it doesn't get much worse than that
Let out a screech and smoked,Let it cool down and started up ok Fired it up again screeched and smoked .Shut off and tore apart///////////
Got a smoking deal on a new 5hp single phase 220v motor on EBay when I needed to replace mine. I wouldn't spend much time or money on repairing a belt drive motor.
My old 3 hp Craftsman(Devilbiss) did the same thing when it was about 15 years old. I replaced the motor bearings(about $6 at the time) and away it went. Petty cheap to try.
Not worth putting a motor in ,I can buy a new one for cheaper ,Ill check the bearings tomorrow,Im just bummed ,Had today off ,Mudded all day ,No issues ,Im on the final sand of the roadster top irons and I heard a strange noise ,I ran over to compressor and shut it down,Motor was hot to touch ,Let it cool for a minute or 2 fired up and sreeched Blue smoke ,Shut it down again,Its a nice size co9mpressor made by coleman ,It works my airboard and cut off tool great ,
Was the motor smoking because the compressor was stuck maybe? My experience has been that when the motor fries, it fries and there's no coming back. I've seen a motor try to start a compressor that wouldn't unload that acted like what you've described, especially if the belt is glazed or loose.
I have a made in USA 5 hp direct drive motor/compressor unit. It is complete with pressure switch and cord. works fine. I bought a used cambell hausford compressor just to get the tank off it. I will take 60 bucks for it, can bring it to jalopy showdown on the 21st . it's heavy, i could ship it but would be pricey i think.
Turns out to be rear roller bearing ,Going to a bearing place early next week,Anybody know where to get coleman replacement bearings and parts ,I heard they went belly up in march...................
I have a 5hp with the compressor on my old one, they were good when I put it out of service, bought a bigger unit and plumbed in the new one without taking the smaller one out, figured add to the volume of the thing.... 1 week to the day later, the smaller compressor tank split open on the bottom....I guess it was only meant to last 20 years If you were closer I would say come get it to fix you up.
When you tear it down just get the numbers off the bearing (or bearings) and you can probably go to napa or most any good parts store and get the bearing they may have to order it. If the bearing has no number that you can find on it just take it with you and any good parts store can measure it up and get you a replacement. Most of the bearings that are used are very common. Sometimes you will need a good counter person that knows how to use a mic which sometimes is more of a problem than getting the bearing.
Thanks thats the game plan ,Sleeve bearing looks ok and crank looks ok ,I would buy another aircompressor but My funds are low right now,Bills are high ,If I cant fix it ,In a week or two Ill bite the bullet.Dont want to do a sleeve bearing ,Just trying to fix cheap or buy new,Ive searched the computer for parts and come up empty.Ive got ten years out of this compressor.
Put new bearing in and learned what I think the problem is ,Check valve going into tank is leaking back,And then locking up motor.....................Ran it 15 minutes with line disconnected No problems ...Ill keep you guys posted There isnt alot to an aircompressor ...............
Its fixed bad check valve,If any of you guys have this problem with a compressor check there first.I rebuilt the pump Bearings only.A waste but in the long run worth it....
Right on man! You know more now than you did AND you spent very little to learn it, not to mention having a working air compressor!
Thanks Rich ,I didnt want to shell out alot of dough for a new one.........I m putting a new belt on it also ,60.00 invested......My aircompressor is a 6 hp .The only one I found was 800...................
