I may be a little obvious, but pull the rear cover measure and count?
the spool will push your T around (doesn't want to turn) you will be happier on the street with an open rear end.

my clumsy attempt at humor, it is late. but I would save the money on the mini spool and put it some where else.

7.5 not a good rear for anything with any power.

I know. I just want to run it at the drags and see what it can handle. Its only 80 bucks and I want to try one. So my question is. Is it a 7.5 REAR??

    It's going in a T-bucket

It'll run out of traction long before it actually breaks anything.

What if I said it stayen in the 79 monte. Then that would be off topic. I want to test it in my monte at the drags befor I pull it out and put it in the bucket.

Ive always lunched the planetaries first in my 81 el camino, so it'll atleast do away with the weakest link.

  10. old soul, I'm probably gonna piss you off, but at the same time maybe save your self and your car some serious grief. Mini spools, no matter what anyone says are for DIRT TRACK use only. Everybody has a brothers, uncles, father in law who has run one for a million miles on the street, bla, bla, bla.......... The rear you have is probably a 7.5" or 7.625" ring gear and only 26 or 28 spline axles. You will more than likely lunch the 26 splines axles immeadiately with the mini spool, then the small little differential housing is next or at the same time, big ka-boom. PLUS you also have C-Clips which will likely break and put you into the wall just after the launch. I'm just a idiot engineer saying, dont do it. Save your money and your hide, and find a good Powertrax to install just as easy as the mini spool. Yes, they cost a lot more, are you not worth it? Mini spools on the street is R*t R*d psychology.

  11. 7.5 GM with 26 spline little bitty axles. Probably has 2.73 or 2.56 ratio ring and pinion set.

I used to mess with G body cars and when the HP gets up near 300 with a manual ****** the rear gears are very marginal with any of the 7.5-7.62.
But it's like the T-5 transmission, some guys get away with using them behind a bigger V-8 and some blow behind a low power V-6.
All depends on how abusive you are .

don't matter which rear you are using a spool in the rear is plain trouble waiting to happen. even on the dirt they can and do get away from you. that is why i like poisi. on the dirt it also does away with trying to get the stagger right also.

The 79 monte does have the 7.5 (unfortunately).

    Per Randy's:

    26 spline.

The rear is rated at 2,833 lbs.-ft max power capacity. [vs. the 8.5's 3833lbs rating and the 14 bolt's 4993 lb rating. (they couldn't give me the 12 bolt's rating:( ) ]

Please do experiment as i'm curious myself. What sanctioned track will you go to?

P.S. i think it will help durability-wise if you leave at idle instead of revving it up to 5 grand, but you probably already knew that....
