NOT O/T! Drinking and driving...

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by safariknut, Apr 18, 2005.

  1. I would like to share this with my fellow HAMBers in the hope that it may have a positive effect on someone's life:
Last Friday night my oldest granddaughter's boyfriend, his younger brother, two of her girlfriends, and some ASSHOLE were driving the girls back home. The driver(20)did not have a license so he was going by the back roads. The were in a Jeep and doing close to 80 mph along this road. There was a set of railroad tracks up ahead(which he knew)and as he had always said,he loved to fly!Did I mention he is talking on a cel phone while all this is happening and they hit the tracks and the car goes airborne, comes down, and rolls over 6 or 7 times, spitting kids out everywhere.
Kira's boyfriend is crushed under the Jeep and dies immediately, his younger brother trying desperately to pull him out from under the car with one arm.The other is mangled so badly it may have to be amputated.
Of the two girls in the car,one is paralyzed from the neck down(no long term prognosis yet but it doesn't look good)and the other is bleeding uncontrollably from the brain and probably will not survive.
The driver? He walked away without a scratch! Why?Because he had a seat belt on.
The only reason my granddaughter wasn't in the car is because she got dropped of first. At least I have something to be thankful for.
My point in writing this is:The next time you have a drink or two and have a carful of people,PLEASE remember this story;it may save your's or somebody else's life! Thank you for listening.
I now have to go prepare myself to attend another unnecessary funeral tomorrow.

  2. Ray,

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. This is one more confirmation why you shouldn't drink and drive. I've lost 3 friends myself and in my duties as a sheriff's deputy have seen too many lives lost because of this stupidity. Your family will be in our prayers.

Sorry about the loss of life and the injuries........SO USELESS.....

I was a wrecker driver years ago and about 75% of all wrecks after 10 PM were alcohol related. Saw a LOT of innocent folks die..for nothing.

    SORRY........

VERY sorry to hear that brother.

The only way I know how to explain this is that teenagers think they are invincible. We've all been there. I reamber at that age whenever hearing this stuff I'd think "It can't happen to me" Well, lucky for me(and my poor Mother)it never did.

I wish after reading this everone would go get there knucklehead teenager's and make them read it too. Hell, print it off and Duct tape it to there dash.

    Hang in there Ray.

I'm so sorry for your loss and what a trgic story. Unfortuantely, these are all too common. So senseless...

I got news for ya, it ain't just young kids out there driving drunk and crazy, it's the "adults" too.

I got a buddy who's dad, in his mid 40's, got plastered one night and decided to drive home in the snow. Whle drunk and speeding, he crashed his son's new SUV (which the HS aged kid bought with his own $) into a telephoen pole. He survived, but was injured bad and was in the hospital for a while. While recoving, he got addicted to OxyContin and is now in rehab. He lost his job, his wife, his home...for what?

It's a message that spans all ages...don't drink and drive

    Horrible.
Also a very good example of why you should wear your seat belt.

It's never too early to ingrain this stuff on your kids. My 9 year old will hear all about this in the morning.

Man, it seems I hear this all the time. For the first time, last year, I had one of my students killed in a car wreck. Actually, there were two students from our high school killed. It was Alcohol related. I took it quite well until one of the boy's mother came to speak before prom night this year. The whole room was in tears......it doesn't just effect a few people's lives....sad!

    Thank goodness for your grandaughter.

sorry to hear it, man. a kid that was younger than me was paralyzed in a similar situation. the drunk driver kept jumping his car, the kid kept telling him to stop and he wouldn't. cracked up bad, the kid was ejected, and paralyzed.

  13. Lost a nephew the same way, driver of that one was a 2 time survivor. some people just don't get it. First if you're high don't drive. And if your ride is high stay wherever you're at and call a sober person for a ride. I'm sure my sister would have happily gotten up in the middle of the night to pick up her son, than make the trip to the hospital and find her soon dead and mangled almost unrecognizable.

I always told my daughter and it still stands if your high call me for a ride, and never ever get in a car driven by a drunk.

  15. It is quite a shame. All that young life with it's bright futures and oppurtunity down the drain.

    Truly a tragedy, Ray.

  16. Really sorry to hear that, but I'm still glad your granddaughter was not still in the car.

That is not the best way to learn thay you should never get in a car driven by somebody who is drunk, but it isn't the worst.

    thats a terrible loss!

ive lost a family member due to a drunk driver (MOM) & none of our family ever really drank or drinks.

i decided early on like 16 i wasnt going to drink.
i still have my 70 SS-454 chevelle to prove it from when i was 18 & today every station or wherever i stop someones standing around my car. --- its the same old story: I HAD ONE JUST LIKE THAT!
I SAY: OH YEAH I BET YOU GOT DRUNK & TIPPED YOURS OVER.
OH YEAH & they go on in detail how they wrecked theirs.
i say i still got mine. never drove her drunk!

i remember all that nice American muscle power in High school. some cars wouldnt last a week & be all bent to fuck from driving around drunk trying to kill people! -------
    good story! GREAT SAFETY TIP!!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. Hey all,

even here on the HAMB in the past I have heard people defend drink driving and I hope this story puts a cracker up thier ass. No matter how good you think you are, just stay the fuck out of a car if you've been drinking. Another life wasted.

Personally I think the bigger picture isn't just drunk drivers but stupid, ignorant, inconsiderate people who shouldn't be allowed to drive a car, ever. And that would take in about half of the people on the road.
I'll never forget coming onto an accident scene in the middle of the day and seeing the paramedics wheeling a small lifeless body with little pink tennis shoes. I read later it was caused by a woman yapping on the phone when she spilled her latte in her lap. and went over the center line.

I hate hearing stories like this one......such a waiste of life, & for what!

Glad your grandaughter is ok....scary to think she could have been in that car!

My son is 17 & just starting to drive, he's a good kid & has his future all planned out in the air force. It worries the hell out of me thinking about him out driving or who's car he'll be jumping in.....but i guess it was the same for my parents way back then.

My wife is a nurse on a pediatric floor at one of the local hospitals. She says that a lot of the kids they get in that are involved in accidents are testing positave for some sort of illegal substance. Keep in mind these are ages 16-20 for the most part. Just about anything out there they are testing positave for. 99% of the parents are clueless as well. Each kid that tests positave has to see a counsler from the hospital, but they are not allowed to tell the parents.

  28. My prayers and thoughts are with you. Especially this time of year. It was twenty years ago last night my sister was hit and killed by a drunk driver. Some dumb drunk kids in a Lincoln Continental drove up an off ramp, driving the wrong way on an interstate, and drove headfirst into the Cavalier my sister and her husband were in. She was wearing a seatbelt but it did little good. The guy that hit her never showed any remorse.

Drunk driving leads to pointless, senseless loss.... PERIOD!!!

When I was 18 I was driving home from a freind's house real late. I was driving home on a road that was pretty deserted that time of night. I came upon what I first thought was just a shoe with something sticking out of it. I swerved to miss it and then had to swerve again to miss this large object in the road. My mind immediatly knew what it was, but tried to convince me it was just a dog or something, until I saw an arm on the curb. I don't even remember pulling into the gas station a block down, or running in to tell them to call the police. It seems I couldn't wrap my mind around the fact that I just saw a body in the road. It wasn't until I saw the cops coverfive piles with blankets that it really hit home. Turns out some guy was driving home from the local bar and hit a jogger crossing the road. Cops estimate he was going 90+ in a 35. Tore the poor girl to peices. The damn drunk didn't even know he did it. He took the car to a body shop thinking he hit a deer.
My sister was almost killed by a drunk, and my best freind died in high school by putting his car into a tree after a party, so it REALLY pisses me off when I hear someone whine (especially here on the HAMB) about what a hassle their DUI was.

Sorry for your loss, you can only hope it saves someone else's life.

And now for a positive funny story about being intoxicated...
    Oh wait, there aren't any.
Let's admit it guys, even the the funny stories are only funny cause you walked away from it unhurt. I've cut back on my drinkin' quite abit and think a glass of wine or beer is fine with a meal. But I had to admit it was a little scary at the Lonestar (and in the pix from Viva) lookin' at all those empty cases of beer and all those fine FAST cars without SEATBELTS or DISK BRAKES or SAFETY GLASS right next to them....
I've driven at times when I know I shouldn't have, and the rest of the world and I have been very lucky, but I'm getting older and want to continue doing just that GETTING OLDER!
