If everything goes as planned my 49 ford will be going into the paint booth no later than the end of this month. I've hit a roadblock though. I haven't managed to find a paint color/ paint code. I have a very good idea of the color i'm thinking for my car . I found pics of other cars with colors similar to what I'm looking for. If anyone can help me with this I'd greatly appreciate it.
Luke take the pix to your local paint and body supplier and ask them to match it. You can either do it off factory paint chips or, if you can't find a good match, they can use a spectrum analyzer to match it precisely. I use Wesco Auto Body up here. It's a chain and may be right in your neighborhood. Post the results when you're done.
Don't try to use a color eye on a photograph to match your color. Your results will be dismal at best. There is a lot of science that goes into the color eye technology and interpreting metallics from printing inks is not one of them. I think you really have a couple of options. 1. Try to locate the owner/builder of the cars you like the color of and find out exactly what is on the car. Many times, they have started with an OEM color, but have left out some of the black, or added a splash of red, etc. Find out exactly if you can talk with someone. 2. Go to the paint store and look through paint chips until you find what you like. This is not as good as you are only looking at a small sample, but you can check out more inexpensive OEM colors as well as more expensive paints like House of Color or SW's line of custom colors. 3. Best choice in my opinion, is to cruise the car lots until you find an OEM color that you really like. Some of the newer Japanese, German, American cars have some stunning colors on them that have very rich pearls and are fairly easy to touch up and color match down the road. Good luck!
They cannot match anything from those photos. Better for the OP to find out who built the 2 cars and ask them directly. I'm looking for a certain blue for my car-when I see photos of blue I like I get the code but when I see it in person it looks totally different in real life. The color of the custom the OP posted is different in nearly every photo. looks Candy red in one, Candy maroon in another, candy burgundy etc. OP I would contact HOK, Dupont and PPG as they are the 3 largest custom color paint companies and see what they say. They might be able to give you a basic color. The problem is most of those custom paint jobs are not stock HOK/Dupont/PPG colors-most have been tweeked by the painter-maybe a little extra flake added on or a little extra toner.
This is the best thing to do if you ask me. You can even go to some of the exotic car lots and see some of their colors. The paint for them may be more expensive, but they are very repeatable in the even that you needed to touch it up years down the road.
go to a mazda dealer. that red looks close to what i saw on a new mazda. or go to any dealer and look at there car colors.
Thanks so much for all the input and helpful replies. I am gonna make a trip out to the dealership tomorrow when I have some free time and see if there's anything that really stands out that's similar to the color i'm looking for. I didn't think of that but it's true most of the colors have been tweaked by the painter to get the specific look that is trying to be achieved. Oh my error on the last picture, it was supposed to be this shot which was a rear angle of the pic in car # 3 . I found what they are listing the paint as on the Westerguard Cadillac, it's a toyota color. Found a 4runner for sale that had the same color. I think it might work out for me
How about this car? Anyone possibly have any info ? Would a good paint guy be able to look at pictures of a car like this and come up with something close to it?
I went to a local paint dealer and they gave me a 2011 american chip chart book, has all Ford, GM and Chysler colors. I took the book and went color shopping at new car dealers, was going to use one of the new Candy Reds but most of them are tri-stage and since I haven't ever shot them I backed out. Painting my 60 T Bird 2011 Ford Kona Blue has metallic and pearl in it looks great and is base clear. Be prepared for sticker shock my base coat is $150 a quart, spent $1200 on final paint materials.
what ever color you narrow it down to, BUY A SMALL sample and do a spray out on a piece of metal prepped like your car. then check it in different lights. worth every bit of the effort.
Thanks for the tips ! Yeah, I had a feeling paint materials would be pricey. Makes sense though, because a color can vary quite a bit depending on the lighting.
Some pretty good advice there Luke. I see that Toyota color on the way too and from work every day when I pass the local dealer's lot. It looks just as good at 4:00 am as it does at 12 noon or 6:00 pm. As he said in post 11 check the color in different light conditions as some that look great in the middle of the day suck at night under street lights or in other light. Which reminds me I need to get by a different dealer's lot at night to see what a certain vehicle looks like under the lights.
That is Paul Braggs Merc, Patticake here on the HAMB. PM him he might be able to tell you he is a super nice helpful guy.
Paul was nice enough to respond to my inquiry ,unfortunately it was a mix from scratch and some of the toners are no longer available. So now I'm trying to figure out if there's any way I could come up with something close to the color on his 51 Merc using House of Kolor's Kandy Base Coat line with some additional tweaking/modifying.
The color on the Westergard Cadillac is "Salsa Red" from a Toyota Sienna mini-van from a few years ago. The guy that painted it is here on the HAMB, but I don't remember his name.
That Merc is the same color as my wife's 2008 Chrysler Town & Country minivan (whooda thunk? ). I don't know the color's name or code, but it's metallic maroon with a hint of gold under bright sunlight. Hope this helps. -Gary
You might have a look a Basque Red and Tango Red, Honda colors. Basque is has more flake and flop, deep maroon tones. Tango has smaller flake, nice flop, slightly brighter tones.
Thanks Gary I will look up that Chrysler color, I will also look up those 2 that you mentioned Ob1. I appreciate your guys help!
Like this? Dark Toreador Red, GM color, around 2004/5/6...thereabouts(I can't remember) Looks maroon inside, looks like dark candy red outside. Lotsa pearl. Covers well, spot repairs nicely(important if you or your customer is a klutz) It was about $78/pt in PPG DBU back when I did this Merc. There's a couple more recent pics of this car out in the sun in "rockable"'s Nashville Goodguys thread from last week(post #18).....It look s redder/brighter than these pics show
Just came across this, it's a nissan color. May be the closest color i've found to the 51 mercury that I posted the pics of http://www.examiner.com/autos-in-modesto/2011-nissan-maxima-3-5-sv-picture#slide=29134316
