Bar's leak liquid copper.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Frenchy Dehoux, Apr 13, 2011.

  1. Has anyone in the past use this product ( Bar's leak liquid copper to seal small sippage of water through the head gaskets. Or if you have use this product in more major issues and it did the job for you. Let me know I have a customer that has a small leak on a flat V8 head sipping between the head gasket and the block and this product is suppose to help.

    Thanks !

basically what that stuff does is fills your cooling system with crap. I did it in my old 250,000 mile daily driver and got another couple months out of it until it finally blew.

I wouldn't put that stuff in any motor I cared about. fix the gasket

It's normal sometimes for a head gasket to weep. Don't use bars leak. It sucks! If it bothers you try a small amount of black pepper or replace the head gasket.

the only people i know who use it are shady car dealers, trying to run a piece of shit through the auction.

I always used *sodium silicate* I used find it in pharmacies. You only need about a pint to seal the leak. Comes in a glass jar, looks like water. To use it,block off the heater core , drain the radiator and flush the system with water, sodium silicate does not mix well with antifreeze. Cool the motor down and fill about half way with water, pour in the *sodium silicate, start the car, continue filling with water. When full, cap the radiator, run until it heats up and for an additional 5 minutes. Shut off and let cool down. Next drain out liquid and refill with old used antifreeze you drained out for a day or two. Drain the system again and fill with fresh stuff.

  9. i used it once and it seemed to work

If you can get the new kind that has the nanobots in it that are able to distinguish between a hole in the head gasket vs an oil passage, then by all means use it.

Several years ago I was out of town at a car show and a freeze plug started to leak in a 396 chev motor. Could not reach the freeze plug because of the exhaust. By the time I made it to a parts store the leak was a stream of coolant the size of wood pencil. Tried two cans of Bars Leak. Steam became a drip, drip stopped. Had hopes of making it 100 miles home. No problem. Never leaked again for several months. I would use it again.

  12. Basically I have distilled water in this flat head V8 engine with water weter. I drained the entire system. Next I will refill the engine with distilled water and add a bottle of this bar's leak which is for head gaskets and block. Next i will run the engine until it is warm next let it cool off than I have to drain the system again dry and refill with fresh distilled water than I will be adding my water weter bottle. Is this correct.Let me know

    Thanks !!!

Water Weter is a waste of money....right up there with the magnet on your fuel line.....

If you ever took any real chemistry....a wetting agent (which is what "Water Weter" is), is nothing more than a long molecule that bonds molecules together that are otherwise avoiding each other....soap contains a wetting agent....along with detergent to break down oils that comprise the dirt we tend to mess with.

  14. i only use stop leak on heater core leaks. especially if it's an off topic german turd, [some of which give remove and replace times in the high teens] then i feel it's worth the risk of plugging the heater core, if it does, it needed to be replaced anyway.

  15. Water glass is the commercial name for Sodium silicate. You have to flush out your antifreeze (or coolant down here) IT WILL NOT WORK IF ANTIFREEZE IS PRESENT.
The same goes for Barr's leak. Water only. I use it on my o/t truck as my intake gasket leaks due to corrosion pitting on the manifold. It has held for over 30K. This weekend I will replace the intake.

<TABLE width=637 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD vAlign=top width=100>[IMG]</TD><TD vAlign=center width=527>Bar's Leaks Block Seal Head Gasket Fix product is the easiest solution to stop head gasket coolant leaks. No draining of the cooling system is required. This formulation contains a combination of antifreeze compatible sodium silicate sealing liquid and various size gasket sealing particles which penetrate gaps & cracks and harden to permanently stop leaks. This seals because of the extreme heat inside the combustion chamber (5000°F) that works as a catalyst to permanently harden the material to make it stronger than the actual head gasket itself. Use on ALL water cooled gasoline and diesel engines. Heavy duty formula works on aluminum and cast iron heads & blocks, along with sealing all other engine cooling system leaks better than a traditional stop leak. This includes repairing head gaskets, cylinder heads, intake gaskets, cracked blocks and freeze plugs. Use with ALL types of antifreeze including conventional green or blue (Silicate-Based) and extended life red/orange or yellow (OAT/HOAT) coolant.

If this is the stuff you are talking about it works. We sell it at work and I have used it on one of my daily drivers. I have a fresh rebuild on a ot van that is a steel block with aluminum heads. The heads where resurfaced and everything is new but there was a small seep every now and then. Used it and it stopped.

  18. That is what I have bought. But I need to put this in once I have filled the engine with distilled water. Worm the engine and let it cool off than the next day flush it out and put in new distilled water and I am done.

I quess I dont understand the removing it. It is made to leave it in and run it.

  20. I used it on my one of my flatheads. After doing a cam swap and adding some adjustable lifters I could not get one of the headgaskets to seal up. Went on FordBarn and everyone recomended adding a bottle of bar's. I was skeptical of the product, but it works.

don't know about a head gasket but it worked on a cracked head on my tractor. just follow the directions. [ it will not work if there is any antifreeze in the system]

Works about as good as using sheet rock mud and news paper to fill rust holes. Great temporary fix, but not so good for any length of time.

I've used the Alumina Seal seal stuff that sells for 2 bucks in the small plastic tube to fix minor head gasket seeps in daily drivers. The product stopped the seep, caused no clogging or cooling problems for several years I drove the vehicles. I would try this product on a rebuilt engine to seal a very minor seep, not on something that leaves a puddle on ground.

You wouldn"t put a bandaid on a cut that needs stitches, replace the gasket.Bars stop leak and Alluma seal work for a temp fix but then if the engine overheats again you have more problems than you started with.Kind like back in the 60s when people would throw a couple of cans of STP in their engine to shut up noisey lifters.Temp fixes are just that.

I'm not saying its a perfect fix but it has its place. And this stuff is way more advanced than the old powder and rabbit pellets stuff. In my case its in a fwd van with a v-6. Its a pull the motor to get it apart deal. I had no overheating and no miss just a small seep. It took me in my aged state of life about 40 hours to reinstall the motor, It aint coming back out by me. Used the stuff and its golden now. I sell it to people that have a $500.00 car and no money to pay a garage to fix it right. My best customer for it is one of the bussier garages in the area. He tells them up front it might work if not they need a new $500.00 car.

If we are talking and old copper radiator I would just solder it. If we are talking a new plastic & aluminum radiator I would say no to much expansion.

I have used Bars Leak in emergency situations to get home with 100% with success.....but once I'm home I correct the problem with a proper fix. Don't rely on it for a magic wand cure all...just my 2 cents worth.
