I have some leftovers from my latest engineswap. There´s a Pontiac (1947) inline flathead eight that is looking sad in the corner of my garage and instead of letting it spill out all of it´s fluids over the floor I have other plans for it. I was thinking of hoping it up with some performanceparts and build an early style railjob. Now the question is, are there any speedparts avalable for this engine or do I have to manufacture my own parts and regrind the stock camshaft? Please help!
I always wanted to do this - sounds like fun to me. Start bending up some tubing to make your own intake (eight 97s?) and headers, mill the block and heads for some compression, and send the cam to someone who's reground a few. Someone out there might know some old Indian tricks like stronger rods that will work, better valves, making a main bearing girdle, etc...I wonder if Egge has some pistons for this thing? If you could build a strong enough bottom end, it might enjoy some nitrous... Inliners International might have some good info - I've seen a couple of these on the salt over the years. Let us know what you find out...
So, mayby the Pontiac 8 is a bad choise for horsepower! So what, I say! I´ll just have to do a little more work on it as I have allready started to dis***emble it. I will start by increasing the compression by milling of the head a bit, boring it out and get some better pistons. I have contacted a local camgrinder and he will have a look at the cam and se what can be done! As for carburation there will be a homemade manifold with four Stromberg carbs from sixties Volvos. (Yeah, I live in Sweden, the land of Volvos!) I will also make my own headers and a better ignition will also be fitted on to the engine. Vertex mag mayby? Who says I don´t dare to be different? Oh, what car to drop the ol´cast iron **** into? A nice little old style raildragster and all of this just for fun!
