Bought some 40 parts from a fellow on here from Canada-good deal and well packed--anyway, I now got a bill in the mail from UPS for charges for Cusoms Duties, other Gov't charges and brokerage fees--amount to about 18% of the parts price--any one else familiar with this?? THX
We get dinged with parts from USA but..... if they are antique parts or made in the USA we can fill out the back of the form and get the duties back... i've dont it before. Free Trade between both countries doesnt mean they wont try and screw you... so, i'd check into it.
Ups is the biggest rip off there is for cross boarder shipping. I refuse to deal with anyone that ships UPS unless I have absolutely no choice.
Whenever I get stuff from the states, I ALWAYS get it shipped USPS. UPS and the other private carriers charge a bogus "brokerage fee" which is total ******** and $$$. If the outfit in question insists on shipping UPS, I go elsewhere.
there should be no custom charges BUT ups screws you with brokerage fees. they are thieves i never use ups across borders
This is exactly right UPS is a rip off, as a US citizen you can bring a whole car into the U.S. without custom charges. Next time use Postal Service and you will not have a problem.
Never heard of this with the parts coming FROM Canada to the U.S. Looks like UPS thinks you are in Canada.
Absolutely. So tired of the m***ive UPS rip - off that I no longer buy from certain vendors either. Brokerage Fees? For what exactly? There was a cl***-action suit going on at one point- but I've not followed it...
I have sold many parts to HAMBERS from way up here in Canada, we still have the odd item for sale. As I have said before just dont use UPS the RIPOFF ARTISTS.
The P in UPS stands for piracy..... I threw a few of their bogus bills in the trash. I had my parts already.
I would have to agree with everyone UPS has "Brokerage Fees" that are totally outrageous!!! not to mention the stuff shows up damaged most of the time. I will not buy from someone that will only ship UPS. I have never been charged extra fees for cross border shipping with USPS.
UPS is the biggest thief around, when it comes to shipping. I priced a brake kit out at Speedway the other day. Kit was $199.00 Us, shipping was $148.00 Us, this didnt include the tax of 13% on the value of the goods in Canadian money,or the brokerage fees from UPS, that are at least $40.00 Cnd. USPS is the way to ship or receive parts, thats for sure. Roger
There is a reason UPS's trucks are brown... I ONLY ship Canada Post and only want USPS coming this way. A friend sent wine to me as a gift ( unknown to me) I paid more for the brokerage fee than the booze AND the shipping cost combined. I only accepted the package because it was a gift from him. Fedex tried it once after the fact and they are still waiting for payment. They can pound sand. UPS stands for Use Postal Stupid!
The trans kits and parts we sell in Canada always go USPS Priority, to date no problems. We also ship a lot of our parts in the US with USPS priority boxs, cheaper and faster than UPS. Big Brown ****s!
Big $$ stuff, the government will want Sales Tax. Shouldn't be any "duty" on antique car parts. "Brokerage fees" are a big rip off. I try and use the post office for everything.
Another vote for UPS being a bunch of crooks. I also agree with the guys that say they damage most of the stuff they handle. I have had 4 out of 5 packages damaged. Go either Canada Post or USPS all the way.
Wow never heard that about ups. All seriousness if anyone is a twit. tweet about it. you'd be surprised the amount of attention that gets with larger companies.
I bought some parts from a guy in Canada and about a week after they were delivered I got a bill for the "duties" I called the company that delivered it (Purolator) and told them to produce a do***ent with my signature saying I would pay the fees. They said when you signed for the package you signed that you would pay. I told them that I did not sign for the package, it was sitting by my garage door when I came home from work. They said well someone had to sign for it, I replied the only one home at the time was my son. They said well he must have signed for it. I then informed them that he was under 18 (at the time) and therefore his signature was not legally binding to anything contractual. I also asked him and he said he didn't sign for it. This was almost 5 years ago and I have not heard another word from them ??!!??
Interesting. I just got some stuff from the USA and they came from Fed Ex Ground. My understanding is if it was made in Canada/ Mexico/ USA then the NAFTA rules apply. I did not pay any duties of any kind, just a straight shipping charge.
I get prices for UPS expedited...brokerage charges are included and a lot less than then charge normally. Hempman it's not duty it's UPS brokerage. I ship stuff south and use Canada Post which uses USPS..no problems up to now.
Agreed. I should have been more clear. UPS brokerage fees are a rip off. Some years ago I knew several guys in the hobby business and they said they always used the post office in Canada and USA for warranty returns/ repairs as it was safer. They never had claims for lost or stolen goods.
UPS is notorious for charging "brokerage" charges on items coming into Canada. It ususally ammouts to the the same as the postage costs
Shipping from the USA to Canada, another option is some companies will ship by Purolator, no brokerage fees as they are owned by Canada Post.
Also basic parcel post from Canada Post has automatic $100 insurance built in and you can add more to the value of the parts for a bit more. A friend claimed a damaged rim and he made a claim and they paid him with little fuss and a bit of paperwork.
Got a hood delivered by UPS today. The corner of the box was obviously kinked, and so was the hood. Refused the hood. When this very large over the road type truck pulled over in front of my house the trailer tore the cable wire off my house and ripped a large corner moulding with it. When I asked thr driver how they handled incidents like this, he shrugged his shoulders and drove away. You don't have to go through Canada to get screwed by UPS.
My daughter works in the call center for one of the major big box club discount houses online store. At least a fourth of her day is spent taking care of claims for goods that UPS damage in shipment. There seems to be a ton of ways that they can break a 40 something flatscreen tv that is in it's padded box. I've shipped a number of things through USPS to Canada and only had to fill out a simple customs form that got attached to the package. I Receive packages quite often from a boat parts guy in BC and Welders Series on the other side of the country quite often and have never had an extra fee through USPS.
Hope some vendors read this thread. Some use the bandits exclusivley or they won't sell it to you. Lots of lost sales there, especialy on epay. I know i won't buy if it's shipped UPS
