    A couple of questions
I have a 283 with 3-2's Rochesters When I first step on it it stumbles after the stumble it will jump naked on you, but the stumble is driving me nuts!!! First question - will the timing cause it to stumble? I always time it by sound with no problems (or so I thought) I have been told to time it until it has the most vacuum. If anyone does that please explain? If it is not the timing does anyone know a good carb guy in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area?

Have you checked your dwell setting?
Sounds like the problem I was having, I set my dwell to 28 - 30 and problem solved.

IF its stumbling when you open up all three carbs at once its gonna happen especially with the little 283. You have to get into the secondary carbs slowly especially when the R's aren't up yet. If you have an automatic ****** its usually worse. With a standard you can slip the clutch some or let the tires spin to keep the R's up.

Another thing to check is the initial accelerator pump shot. Be sure it's strong enough to overcome the momentary lean condition when the throttle is opened.

  5. Did you try to adjust the end carbs to come in a little later?
Do you have accelerator pumps on the end carbs? Power valves?
Do you have an advance kit in the distributor?

The problem is not when the secondary carbs come in it is when its at an idle and I step on the throttle the problem is the primary carb.
The secondary carb are just that - no power valve or accelerator pump.

May be an accelerator pump problem. Modern gas reaks havoc on the older black rubber pumps. Leather pumps work the best if you can find them. New ones made for ethanol laced gas are blue.

Just my 2 cents but it sounds like you need a lager squirt when you hit it. ajust the squiter to give a littel more. O and by the way Pate was awsome.

should be a couple of holes on the acc. pump linkage-go to the one that will give you the most throw and fuel out. Otherwise, get yourself some spray carb cleaner, get it running and go 'round squirting everything looking for a vacuum leak. I've said it before, vac. leaks are death to the 3x2 setups. Might also try to pull the ends, block off the holes and see if it runs o.k. on just the center one. It should be just fine running on a stock center carb.
Otherwise, ***uming the timing is o.k., rebuild the carb or get a new rebuilt one from a parts store-center one only.
