I have the Power steering pump on the back of the generator on my 59, 235.
I removed the power steering equipt. Going to use the manual steering set up for a while. However, with the PS hoses removed, should I fill the pump and plug it so it has fluid in it, or leave it dry? Just remove it completely? Any mods to the generator itself then?
I havent played with the set up yet, as its the next thing to get too, and is really greasy and funky at this point. <!--POLLS--><!--FILES-->

I had a similar set up on a 55 Bel Aire, just removed the pump from the generator and left the spined shaft sticking out, guess the safety police would have a thing or two to say about that, but it was 40 years ago so statute of limitations would apply.

  3. i'm not an expert on that pump , but i wouldn't think you would want it to run dry.

Just find the regular generator and shelf the unit for later or sell it to somebody who needs it.I have saw one where the guy put fluid in the pump and just ran the pressure line to the return and it worked. No pump will last run dry.

Put an alternator on your car and sell the gen/pump unit to pay for it.

I wasnt sure if the fluid did lubricate it also. I was told that the shaft is like a running drillbit out of the back of the Generator...
PS> I see summit sells a altermator looking generator. How hard is the swap?...The alt itself is kinda pricey though..
they have brackets for the 235 engine?

All power steering pumps rely on the fluid for lubrication. Some also need the pump's operating pressure for lubrication.

You wouldn't want to just cap off the fittings. Depending on how the pump is made, looping a line from the outlet to the return might be ok.

As you can see, your best options are to remove the pump, or replace the ***emble with a non-PS generator.
