well it turns out my wife and I will be spending our 5th anniversary in new orleans june 2-5. She ended up having to take some certification cl***es for work. Lucky for me I get to wander the streets and maybe hit some bars while she's in cl*** all day..other than the bars what's there to do ? Anything car related, museums or shows?
Lotsa ***ty bars on Bourbon St. Did I say lotsa ***ty bars? Lotsa regular bars also. Dont stray off the beaten path to far, do your sight seeing with the crowds. My wife and I love it there, the people are great, you will come back listening to jazz, zydico, or some kind of new orleans blues. Dont leave town without a stop at "Cafe Du Mond" for coffee and beignet's $3 bucks, their addicting you'll see.
Yeah...may be a little wet there in a few days. Cafe du Monde is a great spot for beignets and coffee - right down near the waterfront. Not sure about the whole car scene - I imagine Katrina caused some issues there too. Take a bus tour - it's a great way to see some cool stuff - the cemeterys are especially cool. You can still see the water lines in some of the underp***es around town. The whole french quarter has interesting shops - antiques and such. Hopefully some locals will chime in and hook you up with the scene.
lots of good food down there! The Coop is good and seving food late night- http://www.coopsplace.net/ Take the wife to Jacque Imos http://www.jacquesimoscafe.com/ Be sure to eat at Camellia Grill http://www.camelliagrill.net/ I love NO. Can't wait to get there again myself.
Yea unfortunately no car museums but the WW2 museum and the Confederate museum across the street are great. You will not have trouble finding good food and lots of places to drink and listen to music. You will not be bored here i can ***ure you!
My wife and I went there a few years ago and had one of the best meals of my life at Bayona. http://www.bayona.com/ The food is fantastic!!! Be sure to make reservations ahead of time. Your wife will love it!
Oh Yeah - food... absolutely awesome food!!! N'awlins is known for that. http://www.remoulade.com/home.html <- Arnaud's Remoulade was a great restaurant. Highly recommend the Jambalaya and Scrimp Creole! Crawfish, crab, po'boys...the list never ends of great food.
My wife's family lives there and we make it a point to go to the majority of the tourist stuff there. You can use the internet (or use your iPhone) to find self-guided walking tours. There's also a US Parks office there that gives a guided tour of the quarter. Be sure to check out the Garden District and cemetaries. For boutique-type places, take your wife down Magazine--she'll load you down with all kinds of ****...err...treasures. Joey K's on Magazine is great for lunch. Also, go to Central Grocery (in the quarter) for a Muffuletta, but only order a half, if you're pretty hungry. If you buy a full sandwich you'll have left overs for sure. Be careful...there are a lot of conartists there looking to separate you from your $$.
Rebracer is dead on. There's no way to get bored unless you want to be bored. Last time we went (our wedding) we and some friends went to the WWII museum. It's huge, so expect to spend a few hours there! Next time we'll be sure to check out the Confederate museum. They're probably not too much into cars in the city because no car is safe! The streets were designed(?) in the 1700-1800's. History and culture is what N.O. is all about.
Hello Matthew, Sunday June 5 is the 9Th annual Back to the Beach car show and music fest at Lake town in Kenner near the casino. Last year they were turning away cars after 500 were on the grounds. The event had vehicles of every discipline from hamb type to street rods and muscle cars, bikes, racers, cl***ics, antiques etc. The weather was hot and sunny last year so sun screen and hats are a must. The event starts early and it is fun to watch the cars roll in. The car guys from the local and surrounding areas tend to be low profile, but do turn out for this even with vehicles not often seen in public. There are many cars from the bayou country that may not be seen this year due to the difficulties they are having with high water. I do not know if the high water will effect this event since it is on the lake side of the levy. If you check the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation web site, you will be able to find more information.
Been there many times.... Last time got a tatoo... then a fight... then got drunk... in that order Be safe... but it can be fun!
I was just there last week. Bourbon Street can't be beat for drinking and eating. Stay with the crowds though and keep your money in your front pocket. WWII museum is awesome although we had no time for it this trip. Cemetery tours are pretty cool. There is a little histeria going on down there right now about the rising water but remember that the Quarter did not flood in the last hurricanes as it is on a little higher ground....
Go on the Garden District tour. Really cool old homes, landscaping and even cooler old carriage houses which where turned into garages when the automobiles took over. Some really neat old detached garages-you can just picture a Cord or some other car sitting in them. Really 1930-1950's architectlly correct. One garage I remember was L shaped and had a brick courtyard out front. Had them old varnished wood garage doors. It was really cool
damn I'm getting excited..seems like a lot to do! It's funny I've never been and I'm only a few hours away from there.
Yea like in how long can you tread water. If all goes to **** about the only place above the water will be the Quarter. If you can go by past experience New Orleans is not the place to be in a crisis. That said there is a lot to see in that little delta town. Just get yourself a turist guide and wander.
Since Your Wife is there with you and an Anniversary to celebrate, take her to Galatoire's http://www.galatoires.com/ No reservations and a jacket is required after 5. You will be verry happy! Stand on the street in line and get a hurricane from one of the bars nearby. Sit downstairs. The Best.
Every day have morning coffee & beignets at Morning Call at 3325 Severn in Metarie. One day have Breakfast at Betsy's Pancake House at 2542 C**** in NOLA. For Lunch muffelatas at The French Market in the Quarter on the waterfront. Dinner/Supper at Drago's at 3232 North Arnoult in Metarie. Go at least once to Harbor Seafood at 3203 Williams in Kenner for crawfish or shrimp or any seafood. Those are a few of our favorites.
