okay guys I am going to try and cut my windshield for my 54 this week coming up and what I want to know is who has cut their gl*** and how did they do it?

I have been told by a guy that has done it a lot to use a rock grinder and a water hose?

    any one else tried this?

I have also been told to build a box, bury it in sand and use the blaster to cut it?

My gl*** guy scored mine and snapped it in sections as he explained to me..then sanded it down...the diamond blade deal sounds way easier!! The sand blasting method works well too I hear... but no experience with it! Your cars looking good bro!

Shocker, I forgot or lost your cutting thread, but I know thats what I'm going to do. Hot Damn , I told you about Tylerdurbans thread, but this is the one I meant:rolleyes:. If I was ready to do mine we could have a cutting party. I plan on cutting 3-3 1/2 out of my windshield on my 51 Chevy. I would do it like Shocker done it. Good luck, the top looks great.:D

i tried the sandblasting method,my compressor was working so hard i thought it was gonna blow,so i stopped.

tried the diamond tipped tile saw, didnt work for me,either

not to say ,they wouldnt work for others, but in my personal experience
here's what worked for me on cureved windshield gl***.

it s a very slow and kinda messy process,.but it has worked for me...

i bought a pack of the thinest cheapest harbor frieght 4 1.5 cut-off wheels
a can of pb blaster i had laying around and kept the gl*** soakin wet with the PB blaster and very gentily worked my way across the windshield almost "bumping " the switch so that it wouldnt spin to fast, and after id make a p*** id flip it over and keep repeating the process untill i was down to the laminate ,if you move too fast you can see the gl*** start to glow orange where it is being cut and it WILL crack, ive cut a few this way ,old gl***,new gl*** and even a gl*** that was already cracked at the top corner .

    results may vary.

okay so the big questions I have right now are, in using a cut off wheel would I be better to brace it standing up while I cut? seems less likely to have the stress of gravity pulling on it? and do I cut straight across first then cut the corners or all at once?

if you decide to go this route, the MAIN thing is take your time,,,if you take your time it can be done, i wasnt about to pay the gl*** shop to break my windshield so decided to try it and its worked for me,,,

ok,, so when my wife wasnt home, i went and looked for some old towels/blankets ,put them on the work bench and then laid the windshield down on them, go slow, lay out your path with markers, masking tape or whatever will stick,,then go SLOW,,,it took me like 2 + hours to do each windshiled ive done, the gl*** will tell you if its getting hot by starting to glow were the cutoff wheel is coming in contact. go across it very slow,(not deep! just BARELLY scar/etch it )flip it over do the same, flip it back over, keep repeating it.
